Vikings, U of M should have shared stadium

Vikings, U should have shared stadium
Building one great football field for both teams instead of one adequate one for the Gophers made more sense, as construction costs continue to climb.

Vikings owner Zygi Wilf agrees with a lot of people that believe one stadium could have been built for both the Vikings and Gophers.

Wilf understands that there is nothing he can do about it now that a Gophers-only stadium is going to be built.

But if he would have bought the Vikings a couple of years earlier, there is no doubt he would have found a way to satisfy the University of Minnesota with building one first-class stadium for both teams, just as Heinz Field was built in Pittsburgh to house the Steelers and the University of Pittsburgh.

True, you can blame the University of Minnesota geniuses for pulling out of their original agreement to work with the Vikings in one stadium, but former Vikings owner Red McCombs didn't help things either with his failure to negotiate with the school.

Let's face the facts: The Gophers stadium, seating 50,000, will be adequate. But a much better stadium with all of the amenities could have been built if it was being used by both teams.

With construction costs moving up all the time, Wilf has concerns that all stadiums, including the Twins and the Gophers, will wind up costing a lot more than estimated.

Yes, it makes no sense. They can talk all about school spirit and all that on the Gophers campus. But to build one stadium for no more than seven college games and one for the Vikings with 10 home preseason and regular-season games each year still doesn't make any sense.

P.S. Meanwhile, if some corporate and civic leaders would get behind the project, they might have a good chance to get that new Vikings stadium built in downtown Minneapolis rather than Blaine. Minneapolis could use one of those super Wilf family business projects surrounding the stadium.

Typical Sid, still plugging for a Vikings stadium to build on Star Tribune property... :
He also casually forgot to mention that there will be more than just football games in both stadiums.
Concerts, Truck and Tractor shows, etc will still be held in the new Vikings Stadium.
And the Gophers stadium will be more than just adequete.
It looks like it will be pretty damn nice from what I have seen.
And 50,000 instead of 68,000 will mean better seats and a more intimate fan experience.

Come on Sid, have you ever written a positive article?

Right on, Nodak.

I disagree with Sid on this one. The new Gophers stadium is just what the U needs to bring its team to the next level. It will add the mystique and the intangeable homefield advantage that the Gopher teams of recent past have lacked. I am d@mn excited to see some games there.

A college stadium, IMO, belongs on a college campus close to dorms. Them getting their own stadium is the right way to do it.
