Re: Are the Vikings & Twins stadiums doomed now?

there is now way the ref will pass, I want the vikes stadium, but I think it is a mistake to throw away the progress the twins have made and tie the two stadius together. baby steps.

what are we talkin about again?
just listened to kfan, PA and Dubay interviewed Sen. Larry Pogemiller about the stadiums, more about the gopher stadium, dubay really ripped him, Larry doesnt support advertising rights to the stadium but then later admitted it should be more money, so dubay was like:"wait a minute, so for the right price youl sell out then" it was awesome. the interview should be up on kfan.com later.

Dubay and PA really went after Sen Pogemiller and Pogemiller came off as a complete hypocrite, it was one of the greatest interviews ever.

Sen Pogemiller main contention was that selling the naming rights to TCF for 35 million was unsavory, that no other college stadiums have sold their naming rights. Dubay and PA brought up that Louisville Cardinal's stadium is named Papa Johns stadium, and that a bunch of new college basketball stadiums have sold naming rights! Then Dubay said something about inaccurate information and PA said something about using half truths, it was great! Pogemiller kept telling them to calm down and (he is an a$$). Then Pogemiller (the pinhead) said that it wasn't enough for the naming rights and that was when Dubay jumped on him for being a hyporcratie, and that it was alright to sell out for the right amount of money! Then Pogemiller said it is only 35 million, but 35 million is about 1/10th the cost of the Gophers stadium and seems like a good deal for both sides.

What really is going on is that Sen Pogemiller does not want to make the stadium issue easy for Governor Pawlenty, he does not want to give Pawlenty any kind of victory before the election this fall! He is not doing what is best for the State or his constituents, he playing partisan politics with the stadiums issues and it could cost us the Twins and the Vikings. Plus he wants to use the stadiums to get more transportation funding for his committee (he thinks he is the next rising star in Minnesota politics) even tho the 1/2 cent sales tax increase on the 7 county metro area will kill the stadium bills.

If he is a representative from your district please contact him and tell him to knock it off, and to stop f*cking with the stadiums!

Dont worry about the vikings getting a new stadium wilf has already bought the land, he plans on biulding it with private money all he wants is for the state to make the roads, cause that's kinda what states do... make roads. As for the twins, the twins are a differant story they'll get a new stadium, just it getter be sooner rather then later, 'cause if its later it'll be in another state.

    I'm confused.

    Isn't this a good thing?

A 1/2 cent sales tax increase with voter approval? A friggin' 1/2 cent!

If the people of Minnesota don't approve this . . . then maybe Minnesota deserves to lose another Pro Team (Hopefully not the Vikes though).

Wake up people. Call your Congressman and let them know how you feel on this subject. They'll listen if the numbers are strong!

Whew. I'm stepping off the soapbox now.
The deal is, in this scenario the voters get to vote on the increase. In Minnesota, any increase will more than likely be shot down by the voters.

The media will exploit the public & try & convince them that with the increase, most families will not be able to feed or cloth their children. Even though food & clothing aren't taxed as it is.

With gas prices climbing, very few will vote on any tax increase.
The vast majority of the income will be to build a meto system that will ease congestion, save people money, and make those without vehicles more mobile. The model of this is in Washington D.C.

A sales tax increase is a creative way to tax those with money and have out-towners help pay the bill. PA doesn't tax clothing or food either (unless you eat at a restaurant).

If the residents of Minnesota don't pass this . . . all I can say is wow!

Say bye bye to the Twins.

funny thing is, with the twins and vikings out of the dome, wil that not solve half the congestion problems? i dont live there, but it seemed the metrodome contributed a lot to this congestion.

    enjoy the interview!

If a referendum is required on any deal at all, the stadiums are dead. People in this state don't get it until it's too late. It happened with the North Stars, and it's bound to happen again.

The first people in line crying for expansion baseball and football teams will be the same people that are anti-stadium now.
Lots of areas have this problem and then bitch and moan when they lose teams ...
It blows my mind that cities and states don't pony up when it is needed and let teams leave ... and then the NFL marches right in and gives Houston back their team when they did nothing to stop them from leaving ... it is all politics and money and I really hope that the Vikes figure it out and keep the team there in a new stadium.

House committee votes Vikings stadium bill
    Paul Levy, Star Tribune
    Last update: May 03, 2006 – 1:23 PM

The Minnesota Vikings gained a victory today when the House Governmental Operations and Veterans Affairs Committee voted 13-9 in favor of a bill for a $675 million Vikings stadium in Anoka county.
The committee also voted 10-9 against a referendum for funding the stadium.

Zygi Wilf, Vikings owner, said, “The committee took all the information and voted in the best interests of the public. I’m proud of their leadership.”

I've seen two different figures reported in this thread.

one is that a half cent will be added to sales tax, which I read as every taxable purchase will pay an additional half penny to the fund for roads and stadiums.

the other is that there will be a half per cent increase to sales tax. this scenario costs residents a lot more money in the short run.

    So which is it?

LMFAO! You're on PP.O during math class, aren't you?

My fellow PP.Oer, a half percent = a half cent.

0.5 cents in both cases!

Re: Are the Vikings & Twins stadiums doomed now?

singer, what I've described are two different tax schemes, they are not the same. It is common in some municipal jusrisdictions along the Front Range of Colorado to tack on a flat tax of 1 cent to any taxable purchase. So, in the first scheme I described a buyer would pay a penny tax to the city whether they bought a pizza or a porsche from a merchant within the city limits. This is not a per cent (%) tax, as described in the second scheme.

So, you see, a half cent is not equal to half per cent, except when someone makes a purchase that totals $1.

The stories that were cited in this thread used both terms, which is ambiguous. I'll just skim through the Star Trib to try to learn specific details and sort this out.

EDIT: it is indeed a .5% sales tax. I was thrown off when Olson_10 reacted to a "half cent" tax, and others adopted that language.
