You should pay attention. The Democrats are the ones who are killing the stadium effort of all three teams with their Senate moves. The House had already passed bills for the Twins and Gophers. The Vikings bill likely would have been brought to the floor soon had the Senate not gone crazy.

The Senate bill, which was a partisan move by the Democrats, was designed to force the republican governor to choose between two issues he supports, 1) the stadiums or 2) not raising taxes.

Thanks to the senate, the stadium bills are likely doomed. A lot has to happen before it becomes a reality. First the House and Senate have to agree on versions of the bill before they can send it to the governor. I think there is only 10 or so days left of the legislative session, nowhere near enough time for that to happen. If by some miracle it makes it to the governor’s desk, he has already said he will veto a metro wide tax, such as the senate passed. If a second miracle happens, and the governor does sign a bill, the senate still wants it to go to referendum, which will likely kill it.

So, next year, when the stadium issue is still unresolved, make sure you write your local senator and thank them for viewing partisan politics as more important than the future of Minnesota Sports.

FYI, this is in no way a political biased post. I am not a Republican (I am Independent), and I take no pleasure in putting blame on the Senate Democrats. I don't want to turn this into any political debate...

I just hope they all 3 get approved before the end of this legislative session, otherwise they will loose all their momentum and I don't want to have to go through all this again next session.

Vikings | Stadium proposal reaching critical stage
Fri, 12 May 2006 00:53:12 -0700

Brian Bakst, of the Associated Press, reports the Minnesota Vikings may not have the votes to get a stadium proposal approved in the state House. The state Senate has approved a plan that includes separate stadiums for both the Minnesota Twins and the Minnesota Vikings. The state House has approved a plan for a stand-alone Twins stadium. Representatives in support of the Vikings stadium have been left off the House committee in charge of the Vikings proposal and feel that has hurt the Vikings chances. House Speaker Steve Sviggum has said the Vikings proposal is not far enough along at this point to receive a passing vote and the proposal must be approved for this year, according to state law, by Sunday, May 21.

STADIUM GAME: KEEPING SCORE

The House and Senate named members of a conference committee Thursday that will try to reach a compromise on stadiums for the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings.

Committee Lineup

House Senate
Brad Finstad Steve Kelley
Barb Sykora Linda Higgins
Morrie Lanning Don Betzold
Neil Peterson Sharon Marko
Margaret Kelliher Julie Rosen

the pregame

The House approved a bill for a Twins stadium in Minneapolis, paid for largely through a Hennepin County sales tax not subject to a referendum. The Senate passed a seven-county sales tax, subject to voter approval, that would pay for the Twins ballpark, a Vikings stadium and massive transit improvements.

ground Rules

Any compromise bill would be sent to the House and Senate for final floor votes. A bill approved by both chambers would go to Gov. Tim Pawlenty.

Handicap

House members probably will stand firm for the Twins ballpark and against a metro tax and referendum. Senate members probably will accede to most of the House plans for the Twins but would need something in return. Vikings hope it's their retooled plan, perhaps similar to the Twins project.

Re: Are the Vikings & Twins stadiums doomed now?

Minesotan's, as a whole, must really be dumb or they don't realize the facts. More prefer a Twins and Gophers stadium than the Vikings plan. And yet both of those plans will only be for a stadium which gain little in tax revenue except for tickets sales and concessions. And no one will be putting money into the project except taxpayers.
The "Northern Lights" project, on the other hand, is far more than a stadium. It is a money making complex of housing, retail stores, a hospital, and a stadium. The complex is being 3/4 funded by private money and the Vikings stadium is just one part of that. Only Anoka taxpayers will fund the stadium and the only state money used will be for roads and infrastructure which will have to be built sometime anyway as the area develops economically. It will employ far more people and give far more in tax money back to the state than they will ever put out.
I don't live in Minnesota and don't see the "selling job" that Zygi and company are doing, but they better change their ads and begin to sell the other factors of the "Northern Lights" Development rather than just the stadium. If this poll does't change in a hurry the Vikes will be gone to LA.
