Vikings | K. Robinson will be ready for training camp

Kevin Seifert, writing for the Sporting News, reports Minnesota Vikings WR Koren Robinson will report to training camp in shape and sober. Robinson has been clean since spending 30 days in a South Carolina rehabilitation clinic last summer. Robinson proactively re-enrolled in several classes recently for what could be considered a "tune-up." Robinson insisted that he did not have a relapse but was using his downtime during the offseason to continue developing strength against what will be a lifelong issue he will address.


Vikings | Team needs to determine Griffin's position

Kevin Seifert, writing for the Sporting News, reports the Minnesota Vikings will use training camp to determine if rookie DB Cedric Griffin is a cornerback or safety. Head coach Brad Childress prefers to simplify things for rookies, so rather than have him try multiple positions; Childress plans to quickly establish where Griffin will play. Griffin has the size and frame to play safety at 6-1. The team has a greater need at cornerback, where no obvious replacement is on board for departed nickel back, CB Brian Williams. Griffin, who played cornerback at Texas, could fill that role based on need.

He should do pretty well at corner in the cover-two defense. He will make plays.

Vikings | Team thinks they have a good shot to sign D. Smith

Sid Hartman, of the Star Tribune, reports Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin was an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when free agent S Dwight Smith (Saints) was a member of the Buccaneers. So for that reason and the fact that Smith is a vested NFL player and doesn't have to go through waivers, the Vikings believe they have a good chance to sign Smith, who was recently released by the New Orleans Saints.

Vikings | Childress says M. Johnson looks improved

Sid Hartman, of the Star Tribune, reports Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress said OL Marcus Johnson looks to be improved heading into the 2006 season. Johnson, who was in and out as the starting right tackle last year, Childress believes that, as a second-year guy, Johnson should be much better this season. "He had some growing pains last year, and we're going to watch him," Childress said. "Hopefully, he's one year better. There is a point where second-year guys, they've got to contribute, and they've got to contribute big. You don't have time; it's hard to nurse them for four or five years." Johnson is expected to start at left tackle for the team.

Vikings | Childress says Birk has looked okay

Sid Hartman, of the Star Tribune, reports Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress said OC Matt Birk (hip) has looked okay and ready for the 2006 season. Birk sat out the 2005 season after undergoing hip surgery. About Birk and his health, Childress said: "He pushed sleds. He pushed people. It's not like it's patty-cake in those minicamps. He's playing against some pretty good guys with DTs Pat Williams and Kevin Williams in there. I think he acknowledged that he feels healthy."
