    __________________________________________________ __________

    Anthony Schlegel

    Height / Weight: 6-1 / 251

    Position: Linebacker

    Birthdate: 03/01/1981

    Career Notes:

One of four returnees on what many consider to be the best group of linebackers in college football ... is unquestionably the "free spirit" on the team and has fun in all that he does ... enjoys pushing the envelope (has gone wild boar hunting with dogs and a knife in Texas) ... grew up in Texas and has always enjoyed the outdoors ... originally enrolled at the Air Force Academy, but transferred to Ohio State after his sophomore season and sat out the 2003 campaign ... was a team co-captain as a sophomore at Air Force ... began the 2004 season as backup to Mike D'Andrea at middle linebacker and played extensively ... moved into a starting role when D'Andrea went down with a knee injury in early October ... suffered a partially torn MCL before the Indiana game, but played hurt the rest of the year and rarely missed a down when the Buckeyes were one defense ... makes plays and is another one of those "Chris Spielman types" who love to play the game and do so with great intensity ... has averaged 7.0 tackles per game during his career ... was married on Valentine's Day of 2004 ... his wife, Stephanie, who is a graduate of Texas A&M, is a high school teacher at Hilliard Davidson

    2004 (Junior):

Played in all 12 games and started seven times ... led the team in tackles-for-loss with 10.5 for a minus 47 yards ... also had 3.5 sacks (second to Mike Kudla's 4.0) ... 84 tackles were third on the team behind fellow linebackers A.J. Hawk (141) and Bobby Carpenter (93) ... collected a season-high 15 tackles at Iowa ... also in double digits against Indiana (10), Penn State (10) and Purdue (12).

    2003 (Transfer):

Enrolled at Ohio State in April of 2003 and took part in spring drills ... worked out with the scout team defense in the fall while satisfying NCAA transfer rules.

    2002 (Sophomore/Air Force):

Elected captain by a vote of his teammates ... started 13 games and recorded 116 tackles, 54 solo ... stopped 10 opponents behind the line of scrimmage for 54 yards in losses ... also had three sacks for 25 yards ... intercepted one pass and broke up four others while forcing one fumble ... was first Falcon to reach 100 tackles since the 1997 season ... had career-high 19 tackles in home nationally-televised (10/19/02, ESPN) game vs. Notre Dame ... had a 17-tackle game vs. Utah ... recorded first career interception vs. BYU (10/21/02) ... finished third in the Mountain West in tackles ... led the team in tackles-for-loss with 10 ... was named defensive MVP in the Diamond Walnut San Francisco Bowl.

    2001 (Freshman/Air Force):

Played in 10 games, starting the final six games as a rookie ... 26 of his 48 tackles were solo efforts ... a Sporting News third-team Freshman All-American ... media made him an honorable mention All-Mountain West selection ... made game-winning stop at the 2 yard line on game's final play in win over Utah ... averaged nine tackles as a starter.

    High School:

Lettered four years in wrestling and three in football ... all-district selection twice on the gridiron ... third-team all-state and all-area as a senior in football ... was the AAU and state heavyweight champion in wrestling as a junior, was the runner up as a senior at the state meet ... attended a year of prep school at the Air Force Academy ... played football and was the team's defensive player of the year.

He'll be 25 next month..., not that it's old or anything, but most seniors are 22 when they enter the draft.

just cause we interviewed him don't mean we want him or were gonna get him; im glad we are looking at linebackers though. anyone know where he is projected in the draft?

I would have to say we're interested in him if were looking at him.

Will they draft him? Who knows.

But you picked up on what I did. We're looking at linebackers.

It's not big news, but it's Vikings news nevertheless.

And in the offseason, I'll take any Vikings news we can get.
