Vikings' Sullivan prepares to fill void at center

Vikings' Sullivan prepares to fill void at center

Now atop the depth chart at center after Matt Birk's departure, the second-year player is gearing up for the role.

John Sullivan appears the likely successor to Matt Birk as the Vikings' starting center, but the second-year player from Notre Dame insists he doesn't feel pressure stepping into that role.

Drafted in the sixth round last spring, Sullivan now sits atop the depth chart after Birk signed a free-agent contract with the Baltimore Ravens. Birk made six Pro Bowls in 11 seasons with the Vikings and was a fan favorite.

Sullivan understands the significance of being the guy who replaces Birk, and the two have talked about how to handle the situation.

I'm not exactly comfortable going into the season without some security incase he doesn't pan out, but I still think Sullivan can do a very good job.
He got to learn from Birk and sounds to me like a very hard working player.

I like how the article reminds us that people were worried when Birk took over for Christy. Birk was also a late round pick from a very much lesser known football school, and was a tackle and not a center.

Actually, I didn't know that until now.
Not trying to get my hopes up too much, but I think Sullivan do a fine job at center.
Once again though, I'd feel better if someone was brought in incase he doesn't do well.

I don't know why ... really nothing to base it on ... but I think Sullivan will be just fine.

Thanks Garland for the post, I really like Sullivan he's one of my favorite Drafties we have selected. I think he will be a sucessful player for us. I think he has the mental and physical tools to be a factor in the NFL. One thing I thought was very intristing was where he said he had made several strides mentally and "physically". Coming out of college he didn't have the strongest upper body and that was some concern to me. If he's able to beef up, be stronger and have a great work ethic we should be just fine and some of the pundits doing the draft anaylysis will be wrong about his future potential.

Re: Vikings' Sullivan prepares to fill void at center

Here is a post I made in another thread, I think some will find it intristing as I've done a good amount of research on him. Here is what I have found...

Positives for Sullivan involve a great pass protecter, a guy who can get out "athletically" on the pull and do some work, he uses great leverage and has very speciman like legs/trunks. He's a very good pass protecter and as Spielman noted today he's also a very good run blocker which is something new to my research on Sullivan. Some things that are not so football related such as his past History as a competitive Wrestler is very impressive, this shows technique, discipline, smarts, balance, strength, leverage, competition and tuffness. Sullivan dominated Wrestling loosing very few matches and winning multiple state titles. Sullivan was also the first guy into Winter Park this offseason, he was seen running the tread mill. When I listen to Sullivan he's either fooling me or he is a very smart guy, well spoken, says all the right things and I love his "THOUGHT" process. We need intelligent football players and I think Sullivan meets that standard. Great Work Ethic matched with Intelligence and Technique is a good start for Sullivan. EDIT: To add in, Sullivan scored a 35 on his WonderLic. Tops in the 20 Yard Shuttle and Verticle Jump at the Combine all showing his explosiveness.

Negatives probably involve numerous conflicting scouting reports, I've never seen more confliticing scouting reports than I have for John Sullivan. Many say he has maxed out his potential, whatever that means... Some say he is not a very athletic guy but that contradicts as well. Some of the things I know for certain involve shorter arms than what one would like, he also was dead last in bench press with 21 and short arms at the combine, thats not very good. Notre Dame fans were not estatic with his Senior Season play and has plenty to do with slipping to the 6th round. EDIT: Sullivan also had real difficulty snapping the ball out of the ShotGun, this has to be corrected, we don't do it all the time but we use it.

Overall I'm far more impressed with Sullivan than unimpressed. He's got very big shoes to fill, Birk was a Deep Rooted fan favorite for numerous reasons. I think if Sullivan dedicates himself which I fully expect, he has a real opportunity to suceed for the Vikings. I want him to get stronger in his upper body and just start getting experience at the NFL Level. One thing that will help him is having Hutch and Herrerra to his side, this is a good place to be.
