Vikings - Slow start could mean blackouts

Slow start could mean blackouts

If the Vikings are going to turn things around after a 6-10 finish last season, they will have to get off to a good start on the road in 2007.

The Vikings sell-out streak is over. Unless the Vikings draft/sign some high profile player(s), I believe you will see a lot of Vikings home games blacked out this year.

I guess this is one of the benifits of living in VA and not MN.

I don't think blackouts affect the NFL Ticket.

Sorry to see this streak broke though. :'(

That's right.
It isn't broken yet.
There are a couple of things that could affect ticket sales, although none more than simply winning.

1) Draft an exciting player.
CJ or Brady Quinn would both generate some excitement.
Granted I don't think that either will fall to us, and I also think that there are players who could do more for the team than Quinn.
However, we all know that offense sells tickets while defense wins championships.
Our QBs and WRs were the most noticeable shortcomings last season, so an exciting new rookie in either one of these spots would generate excitement.
If either one of those players get picked up by the Vikings, we could market ticket sales around them.

2) Aggresive marketing.
I remember back in 92 when Green took over as head coach.
There were some great commercials on the radio marketing the team.
My favorite was the one where the players are excited because Denny says they are going to kick on 4th and short, and then Denny goes out on the field and kicks the players asses before going for it on 4th and short. LMAO.
Right now the Vikings are facing a negative public image.
Partly because they simply weren't exciting last year, and partly because the media in Minny likes nothing better than to pick apart Childress because he doesn't cater to them.
A strong marketing campaign could go a long way to keep the sellout going, at least in the first few games.
Last year the new uniforms and the billboards across the metro area were a good start, but Zygi needs to invest some more money into a more aggressive campaign.

3. Win.
Nothing fosters forgiveness like winning.
The Vikings are only at home twice in the first seven weeks of play.
And the teams they are playing are tough.
But a winning record keeps playoff hopes alive, and in the end, that will get the fans back in the stands.

Go ahead.
Spin this any way you want.
All I know is that I don't have cable and won't be able to watch any of the games.
It's pretty hard for me to get overly enthusiastic about a team I won't be able to watch.
(Not as excited as in previous years, anyway).

At least I'll have those road games. :-

I have the Sunday Ticket.

If you feel the need to blame anybody, blame the people living in and around the Twin Cities for not going.

I don't even want to think about it.

But there will be plenty of bars with it on.

And that's cool with me. Lord knows I'm not opposed to hangin at a pub downtown for a game if I can't be AT the game.

I think it makes more sense to blame the owner and management for not putting a quality product on the field. I don't blame anyone for no shelling a big bucks to see a team that has little or no chance of making the playoffs.

I don't think though that we will see any blackouts this year unless the vikings win 2 or less games in the first 7. (im not sure but don't they usually block the games from cable too? If anyone knows let me know.)

I don't have to worry about blackouts where I live. Hope the people in the cities don't have to worry about it.
