Heard an interesting rumor that the Vikings may be considering former Indianapolis Colts defensive tackle Corey Simon as a possible backup to Pat Williams....

Are we doubting what the guru of capology is doing?
    :

Rob Brzezinski has yet to do anything to warrant doubt in my mind.
This does two things, a) Makes Phat Pats agent reconsider the tender they are asking for, b) Gives us some debth if illegal boy is in jail for any significant amount of time.

    Again, don't doubt the guru.

Part of me wonders what the hangup is with Pat's extension.
My guess is that it is about length on contract and bonus money, not the base salary itself.
Pat wants to know that he can retire at any time and be fine.
The Vikings only want to pay him for his remaining productive years.

I honestly hope they reach an agreement.
Pat is one of my favorite players.
But it is a business in the end.

Folks need to remember that it was Pat Williams' AGENT who broke off negotiations (at least publicly).
Folks also need to remember that THREE key Vikings were signed to extensions during last season (McKinnie, EJ & KWill).

I know it's fun to get those panties all in a bunch over things, but there are going to be TONS of players on the market for jobs in the next couple weeks.
Every one of them is not a potential Viking, nor a reason to get all worked up over things of which we have no clue.
For all we know, the Vikes and Phat Pat's agent are meeting for tea this AM in the IDS building (is it still called that?)

    =Z=

Thanks to Josdin for the awesome sig!

It may not be all the Vikings fault. Pat just may want to test the FA market. Players do that all the time.

I think the Vikings want to see Pat's play for a better part of this season.
If they feel he still has fuel in the tank, he will likely see an extension by the end of the season.

Personally, I'd rather not do this even though I know we are "thin" on the defensive line.
But next year's draft is loaded with great quality defensive linemen, especially tackles. I think that will be our first draft choice next year.

i'm more skeptical about simons health and ability to contribute more so than brzenzinski.
but chances are it's a risk worth taking cuz he should not come expensive considering his last 2 years.
what worries me a bit is, does this send a message to patt that we are ready to move on without him?
if simon works out, okay we can live with it, but if he's done we could have burned the bridge with patt and be stuck.

and as for the idea that alot of players are gonna hit the market after cuts begin, don't hold your breath.
with the increase in salary cap, most teams are not strapped where they have to cut players of major value based on salary.
i'm not saying there won't be talent out there, but it's gonna be closer to finding a gem in the midst of lots of pooh.

I would assume the length is the biggest hold up.
Pat Williams (much like Brad Johnson last year) is coming of a productive season and has "claimed" he can play another 4 years.
I'm sure the Vikings are not willing to make that kind of time commitment for a player that was considered "old" when he signed here 2 years ago.

    1. Pat and Brad really aren't comparable. Did Brad lead us to the #1 passing offense?
    2. We are talking about Corey Simon, not young at all. If it were Haloti Ngata or someone it would be different. replacing a talented vet with another vet of lesser talent doesn't make sense to me. We would be in the same place in another 4 years. I say resign Pat and bring in a young DT to develop.
    3. In the end you are right, ;ength probably is the hold up, but in four years Pat Williams still can be a serviceable backup.
