If the preseason is any indicator, Vikings coach Brad Childress' emphasis on special teams was for naught....

Is Longwell saving the 4 second kickoffs for the season? He line drives them down to the 10 yrd line and it gives the return team a extra second to set up a return. We simply can't get downfield in kick coverage with those low line drives Longwell keeps punching. We need a consistent 4 second + KICKOFFS, so we can be in position to cover them.

This article puts a "different" slant to our special teams. Ferraro seems to think once the season is underway, we'll a be lot better.

Ferraro said the coverage units he projected to take the field against the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 9 have yet to play together in an exhibition game. The most players he's fielded at the same time was against the New York Jets, which happened to be the team's best performance to date.

"Whether it's the punt team or the kickoff team, from one side to the other, we've not had them all in at the same time," Ferraro said. "When you see us kickoff against Atlanta, and punt against Atlanta, you'll see a little different lineup than you've seen."
    This is an interesting read.

This is a depressing read. And it doesn't look much better this year.Longwells leg looks stronger but still not strong enough for touchbacks.Ferraro didn't get the job done last year.Sadly I don't see much improvement. I hope the starters he uses make a huge difference and don't get hurt.

    Quote
Minnesota was second to last in opponent's average start (30.7) on kickoffs, Longwell was tied for 30th with just three touchbacks, and he averaged an NFL-worst 59.1 yards a kickoff. Kluwe was 28th in net punting (35.6), and Bethel Johnson was 21st on kickoff returns, averaging a modest 23.4 yards

I hope Ferraro's calm, matter-of-fact demeanor and approach is matched by on-field performance of the "units we haven't seen."
I will defer until after 4 games of the Regular Season.
If what he says is true, and it is certainly logical to audition in the "Exhibition Season," the ST should improve dramatically.
I hope he's right, we shall see soon enough.
If the speed has improved, it isn't seemingly in the return game...maybe it has in the coverage game.

Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent

Special teams could cost us the playoffs....... I hope we become less agressive and just kick it in the endzone to make them start at the 20.....we just cannot seem to tackle on punt nad kickoff returns! KevinK Connecticut

I here you, but the special teams really should be performing up to season standards especially kickers and punters!

I believe that Longwell has done what they have asked him to do - and what he is capable of doing.
On kickoffs, that's putting them somewhere around the 10.
