Why is Berrian not regarded as a #1 receiver?

    - He was the #1 receiver in Chicago.
    - He had 17 more catches than our best receiver last year.
    - Among receivers, he was top 20 in catches. Everyone above, except for Shaun McDonald, is a #1 receiver. Players such as Boldin, Ward, Bowe, and Buress were below him.
    - 22 In Receiving yards among receivers. Higher than Greg Jennings and Lee Evans.
    - There are 32 teams in the NFL. Not all of them (Vikings, Titans, Jaguars) had #1 guys, but Berrian is above the cut line.

Is Berrian an elite, game changing receiver? No, but I believe there is a distinction between that and being a #1 WR, which Berrian is. In any event, he is a major upgrade for us. We did not have a #1 WR last year. We have one now.

I expect 70 catches, 900 yards, and 5 TDs. That's what he had last year, when he was the only weapon on the offense.
Again, it backs to what you call a number one reciever.
Is it the guy who makes the most catches?
Is it the guy who runs the deep route.
Is it the guy that will catch the most TDs?

I agree he is a very nice upgrade and that he will help solidify the WR corp, but again, when talking about a WCO you don't use the term #1, #2 or #3.
People get to caught up in we need a #1 and who will be our #1. I just want are guys to catch the ball, help TJ limit turnovers by playing defense on a bad pass, and block for Peterson and Taylor. No need to worry about who gets the ball the most or if we have a 100 yard receiver each game. Just move the chains with a balanced offense and get that W. What I like about our receivers is that is seems they are not selfish and just want to help out in any way possible. I am just glad that Troy is no longer here. Bernard is a huge upgrade but does not have to focus on being our #1. All he needs to do is make plays.
The truth is that it takes a primary receiving threat to accomplish what you have in mind. Having a WR who the defense must respect will help the offense immensely. So I guess the question is, can Berrian garner this respect?

I think yes. Maybe he is not good enough to draw constant double teams, but defenses will be risking a lot more than they were last year if they disregard the pass. Berrian has the power to burn them deep. A safety who bites on the run fake to AD is in a lot more trouble, because it's not Williamson. He ain't dropping it.

In any event, there is a ton of pressure on Berrian to perform. He is not regarded as a top tier WR yet, but he has the chance to break into that group here in Minny. Also, our miserable passing attack made one addition: Berrian. If our passing game continues to struggle, the headlines will read, "Berrian has not been able to provide the upgrade that the Vikings expected from him."

If he acheives the same numbers as last year, I truly believe we'll have a top ten offense. Numbers will go up for TJ, Rice, and AD.
I'm with you on that!!!.. good post!!... definitely!
