The Vikings need to call a press conference

The Minnesota Vikings need to call a press conference for this afternoon and announce that they have signed interim head coach Leslie Frazier to a new contract extension. Vikings owner Zygi Wilf should have met the plane last night at the airport with a copy of a contract in his hands. Last nightís game was supposed to be a Philadelphia Eagles blowout.

The thought of playing the Eagles in a blizzard was more appealing because the snow was going to be the great equalizer. An act of God was the only way that Michael Vick was going to be slowed down. So when it was announced that the game was moved to Tuesday night and the weather was going to be better, all hope was supposedly lost for the Vikings. It didnít take an act of God to defeat Vick, all it took was a Vikings pass rush which had been silent for most of the season. This was the defense that Vikings fans thought they were going to watch in 2010.

I'm still not 100% sure, but if it means we will keep more players and don't have to start over again next year, I'm almost onboard with this.

That is, if he keeps Coach Pagac and makes him D-coord.

By the way, they better promote that dude before another team looking for a D-coord come after him. His title/role means any team can talk to him cause it would be a upward/promotion move to go from a position coach to a Coord.

I'm not sold yet. Remember the Giants game? Remember the Bears game? Those were embarrassments, the team was not ready to play those games.

It was a great win, but still just one win. I'd still rather have a proven coach that players know can win it all. If they can't get one of those guys then stick with Frazier.

I was listening to Tim Ryan/Pat Kirwan talk to John Fox last night. They asked him, is it his last game. He said yes.

Can you think of a better HC right now? Knows how to build from the bottom up. Knows what it means to be in the SB.

As you said, I'm not 100% convinced either but they (the Wilfs) need to look long and hard at who they bring in this time.

I don't think the fans or most of the players will tolerate another "Authoritarian" type of leader. Very few coaches out there have been successful being the "Nice Coach". Foxy is one of them.

I guess the overall feeling is that if the staff want to keep him, they better get it done before the end of the season.

Sure are gonna be alot of jobs open in a short time. Might be better to ink him now, if he is your guy, than to let him hit the streets.

On a side note, if the players like him that much, what would thier opinion be (especially the ones who can walk when FA hits) if the staff didn't try to keep him?

As I pointed out in another thread.....29 players should have some sort of contract done during this offseason. Anything we can do to minimize how many walk will go along way to keeping a bit of continuity on the roster.

Don't know much about John Fox, but I wouldn't be convinced he is the answer.
In 9 seasons as a head coach he's made the playoffs 3 times, once in the last 5 years. His record is 73-72. And he has never won the big game.

When I say proven I mean, has won a superbowl. Gruden, Parcels(gm), Cowher, Shanahan, Holmgren, Coughlin, would top my list(in about that order).

I don't care what the masses think of the coach. If they win the masses will fall in line rather quickly. If they lose the masses will turn on them, even if they are nice guy like Fox or Tice.

Players want to win, if they believe in the coach they will deal with the rules and restrictions. Just look at new england.

I'm going on one assumption here when I talk someone other than Leslie. That assumption is that we loose the predominance of the 29 players that need contracts addressed going into next season.

If we do that, rebuilding mode will be in full swing and losses will mount up.

Most of Foxes losses were during a time like that but he built a winner.

Anyway, what we have learned from both Denny and the Chiller is that most Vikings fans don't like a stern kindof guy and will turn on him in a minute even if he wins.

Again, why I gravitated to Fox for this discussion. He has a "Open Door" "Player" mentalitity that guys like Gruden, Cowher, Parcells, Couglin don't or didn't have.

In the end, I am just sick and tired of rebuilding every 4 or 5 years (it seems) and want someone that the fan base won't turn on right away and might be patient with. Again, Fox fits that bill.

I still think the best fit for this talented team right now would be Jeff Fisher ... and he will end up being available because Adams loves Vince Young.

Re: The Vikings need to call a press conference

Because of the Rooney Rule, Frazier CANNOT be hired right now. Since he is the INTERIM coach, he cannot be made the non-INTERIM coach until after the NFL season is completed. Frazier is in a weird place with the Rooney Rule - he satisfies the "interview a minority" requirement, but the fellow requirement of not elevating an interim coach until the season is over is biting him at this point.

    =Z=

Thanks to Josdin for the awesome sig!

I think you assume to much in the assumption that we will completely rebuild with a new coach. Any coach is going to assess the talent and keep as much of it as they can. I just want the best talent evaluators and coaches making those decisions.
Gruden for one went to Tampa and kept most of the players there, while adding pieces to the offense.
I do think we need a coach that will get back to a long term strategy(I think Chilly started that way but got away from it as pressure to win now mounted). Win now mode doesn't get you far in the NFL. Just look at the redskins.
