Vikings name captains (for the year)

    http://blogs.startribune.com/vikingsblog/?p=1885
The Vikings have named season-long captains for the first time.

Coach Brad Childress said today that Pro Bowl guard Steve Hutchinson (offense), middle linebacker E.J. Henderson (defense) and kicker Ryan Longwell (special teams) were elected captains by their teammates last week. Those three will wear a “C” on their jersey.

I was surprised that Longwell was named captain. A kicker... but on the other hand it's nice to see a kicker get so much respect. I was 99 % shure that E.J. Henderson would be named captain, and not very surprised that Hutchinson was named captain either.

Birk seems like he would make a slightly better captain than Hutch...but what do I know?

Yeah, I thought Birk would be named Capt. of the Offense.

A kicker seems like a good choice for our special teams captain..

You don't NEED to have a captain on your special team, do you? No really... do you? Cause I don't know. Is it really that important to have a captain on the special team. Well, if it is a must then I believe Longwell was the right choice. He seems like a reasonable guy, plus he's been in the game for quite a long time now. On offense, I thought Birk was going to be named the captain, but Hutchinson is the best guard in NFL so why not. If E.J. wan't the captain, I think either Sharper or Winfield would have been it.

Here is another link about the topic:
    http://thevikingage.com/2008/09/04/captains-named/
For some reason, the NFL has sent out memos ordering encouraging teams to undertake this practice rather than have game-by-game captains as the Vikings did last year.
Why exactly is this important to the league?
Is there some scheme to sell special, higher-priced jerseys with the “C” on them?
In that case, the league should’ve made the Vikes name Adrian Peterson and Jared Allen captains, since their jerseys sell more than the other guys’.

    Take that Marrdro!

Ryan Longwell, an ex-Packer, is a captain.
