    Vikings "Motoring" Along .....

    Motoring along
The Vikings were able to thwart the Lions' fourth-quarter rally and hold on to their fifth straight victory this season.

DE-TOILET - The head coach still was muttering some 20 minutes after the final gun. He had just ordered his players to report for an unusual 10 a.m. film session today, tearing into them after the Vikings escaped Detroit with a 21-16 victory over the hapless Lions. Mike Tice was upset at his offensive line, irritated by several questionable penalty calls and determined to find more problems to complain about.

    Finally, he caught himself.

"Whether you win by 20 or you win by three or you win by one," Tice said, "all that really matters is if you win. Maybe we should have learned that a few years ago."

Yes, what might the Vikings have accomplished if they hadn't taken so long to stop counting on aesthetics? For even as they produced the best passing day of their five-game winning streak, the Vikings won Sunday because placekicker Paul Edinger -- filling in for injured punter Chris Kluwe -- pinned the Lions at their 7-yard line with 2 minutes, 46 seconds remaining.

They won because linebacker Keith Newman pressured Lions quarterback Jeff Garcia with 52 seconds left, forcing a moonshot that safety Corey Chavous intercepted to seal the game.

And frankly, they won because Garcia couldn't hit an open receiver if one tapped him on the shoulder.

Garcia managed only 91 passing yards before the Lions' last-gasp drive, which ended at the Vikings' 2-yard line after Chavous' intercepted what could have been a 48-yard touchdown to Roy Williams. As the crowd at Ford Field called for backup Joey Harrington, Garcia completed 17 of 35 passes for 126 yards.

In their first game since Dick Jauron replaced head coach Steve Mariucci, the Lions totaled 223 yards -- the lowest by a Vikings opponent this season. Ford Field was no hornet's nest; the buzz died after Brad Johnson connected with Koren Robinson for an 80-yard touchdown on the Vikings' first offensive play.

"The atmosphere was dead the whole day out there," nose tackle Pat Williams said. "It was like we were playing outside or something. They weren't even cheering for their team, just sitting in the stands and cheering at each other. I've never played a game like that. It was just terrible.

"But we couldn't be worried about their situation. We just came out with our game plan and tried to beat them. We knew it would be a strange situation. So our main focus was just coming out with a win. We didn't care how. It was ugly, but we came out with the win."

Indeed, the loudest reaction from an announced crowd of 61,375 came in the fourth quarter, when an enterprising fan began running from section to section with a sign that called for the team to fire President Matt Millen. Security members ejected the fan, and the Lions soon followed him out the door.

"Too many years of not living up to expectations," Garcia said. "And today, not doing the things that we needed to do to get them excited about the game."

The Vikings' game plan, Tice said, featured a goal of "getting the crowd to boo early." The jeers came about three seconds after Johnson released a deep pass down the right sideline toward Robinson, who beat cornerback R.W. McQuarters.

Johnson called the play "Louisiana" -- "As in, Blew by-you," Tice said. Ever the comedian, Tice joked that Johnson would undergo hernia surgery today and that team officials needed a wheelbarrow to "cart [Johnson's] insides off the field" because he put so much effort into the throw.

Even Johnson, who completed 17 of 23 passes for 256 yards, was surprised that the throw traveled some 55 yards in the air.

"It was a big tone-setter for us as far as the day went," Johnson said. "It was good to come out like that."

Johnson continued to throw downfield, connecting with Robinson for 45 yards on the Vikings' second drive to set up Michael Bennett's 7-yard touchdown run. Bennett, playing for an injured Mewelde Moore, also scored on a 5-yard pass in the third quarter to make the score 21-6.

The Vikings appeared to have closed out the game midway through the fourth quarter when cornerback Brian Williams returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown, but officials called Pat Williams for a late hit on Garcia. The call was one of several Tice was steamed about afterwards -- for one, because Williams was not on the field for the play. Defensive end Darrion Scott said he hit Garcia, but replays showed it was almost immediately after Garcia threw the ball.

The Lions turned the play into a 14-point turnaround when Artose Pinner's 6-yard run brought them within five points.

Although they remain two games behind Chicago in the NFC North, the Vikings' 7-5 record has put them squarely into the wild-card picture.

"And not to look ahead," Tice said, "but we do have three of our last four games at home" -- where they are 4-1.

In a rowdy post-game locker room, tight end Jermaine Wiggins was not exaggerating when he said, "The ball is in our court now. If we keep doing what we're doing, we'll control our own destiny."

Which is starting to look pretty good.

Once again, Louisiana provides the necessary ingredient to success...first Louisiana native Pat Williams comes in and sets the tone for the defense...then Mewelde Moore, another Louisiana product, comes in and ignites the running game...now this...THANK GOD for LOUISIANA!!!

    Night Ranger - Sister Christian

Sister Christian, oh the time has come
And you know that you're the only one to say, OK
Where you goin', what you looking for
You know those boys don't want to play no more with you
    It's true

    [Refrain]
    You're motoring
    What's your price for flight
    In finding Mister Right
    You'll be all right tonight

Babe, you know you're growing up so fast
And momma's worrying that you won't last to say, let's play
Sister Christian, there's so much in life
Don't you give it up before your time is due
    It's true, it's true, yeah

    You're motoring
    What's your price for flight
You've got him in your sights
    And driving through the night

    [Refrain thrice]

Sister Christian, oh the time has come
And you know that you're the only one to say, OK
    But you're motoring
    Yeah, motoring
