Judd Zulgad, of the Star Tribune, reports Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress said SS Dwight Smith will remain with the team. Childress said, "He's a starter as far as I'm concerned. He gave a very good accounting of himself last year."

Sean Jensen, of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, reports Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress said Vikings DE Erasmus James (knee) recently had a follow-up procedure on the knee he had surgically repaired last season. Childress said James will not be ready for minicamp, but should be ready for training camp.

Birk's agent, Joe Linta, said, "Matt wants to finish his career as a Viking, and he's instructed me to do what I can to make that happen."
