I don't like to admit it, but the author makes some good point about the Vikings playing outdoors at TCF Bank Stadium in 2014 and 2015.

Let's hope Vikings just continue to get better and better with the promising young roster we have now. A great team will overcome the certainties.

He makes some good points for sure. The Peterson bit was a stretch though.

Minnesota was 10-2 in domes in 2012-13. However, they were 0-5 in outdoor stadiums.
Ponder’s QB rating in outdoor stadiums last season was poor, compared to a respectable rating indoors.
Outdoors in 2012 Ponder had a rating of 73.2 completed 59.4% of his passes (56.7% on grass) & averaged 5.37 per pass.

Indoors in 2012 Ponder had a rating of 87.3 completed 64.1% of his passes & averaged 6.61 per pass.

In 2014, the Vikings will play outdoors in at least 13 of there 16 games.

But then again there's no guarantee Ponder will be our starting QB in 2014

It has more to do with home games vs. away games, than outdoor/indoor games. If the Vikings home games were outdoors it's likely Ponder and the team would have better outdoor results.

We'll see how much of a "gift" this is when the Packers actually come to visit.

    Good point.

I think two general statements can be made. QB stats on the road are worse than at home and QB stats outdoors are worse than indoors. There will always be exceptions (esp. Matt Ryan), but over a large set of data I think those two statements will be fairly significant.

Quarterback Rating - Home vs. Away Across NFL Teams - SportingCharts.com

1991 - 2011 stats on home vs away QB ratings shows 81.96 vs 77.42 (4.54 point differential).

I couldn't find a general study on indoor vs outdoor, but if you look across most QB's indoor vs. outdoor you will find there is generally a significant drop in rating, generally around 5-10 points. The elite QB's don't seem to have as much variation in their numbers and even go against the averages, guess that's part of why they are elite. I grabbed some stats from 2012 courtest NFL.com situations stats for the above average QB's. The average for these 10 QB's came out at 95.9 on turf and 88.6 on grass.

    Elite QB's:

    Tom Brady (2012)
    Home Away
    101 96.5
    Turf Grass
    99.2 96.9

    Aaron Rodgers (2012)
    Home Away
    101.3 114.9
    Turf Grass
    108.3 107.8

    Drew Brees (2012)
    Home Away
    103.4 90.1
    Turf Grass
    94.6 100.2

    2nd Tier QB's:

    Eli Manning (2012):
    Home Away
    96.8 77.4
    Turf Grass
    95.4 84.3

    Matt Stafford
    Home Away
    81.4 78.0
    Turf Grass
    83.6 74.3

    Joe Flacco
    Home Away
    99 74.9
    Turf Grass
    98 75.3

    Matt Ryan
    Home Away
    86.2 111.3
    Turf Grass
    93.1 109

    Matt Schaub
    Home Away
    101.7 79.5
    Turf Grass
    97.5 71.8

    Phillip Rivers
    Home Away
    83,8 93.2
    Turf Grass
    99.7 87.1

    Jay Cutler
    Home Away
    79.4 83.2
    Turf Grass
    89.3 79.0

I might tend to agree with that except our "home" games in 2014, although in MN, are actually at TCF & not a field we are used to. It's not the same as playing in the Metrodome. Look at our other "home" game at TCF & our "home" game at Detroit or the Saints home" games in 2005. All home games are not the same.

The Bears were a 13-3 team in 2001 at Soldier field, but in 2002 when they played at Memorial stadium while Soldier Field was being renovated, they went 4-12.

Wait, wait. I thought I have read in here how playing out doors in the freezing cold and snow was going to be a huge advantage to the Vikings. We should be going 13-3 during our stay at TCF.
