On Wednesday, the Minnesota Vikings concluded a three-day minicamp that marks the end of off-season workouts for the team. Players and coaches will get just over a month off before returning for training camp in Mankato, which is set to begin in late July. Rookies and selected veterans report on Thursday, July 27th and the rest of the team reports on Sunday, July 30th.

The team didn't hold any practices on Monday and went bowling instead. On Tuesday they practiced twice and followed that up with a morning session on Wednesday. Coaches will work through Friday and then take a while to recharge before training camp. Players are excused today.

    Roll Call

Nearly 100% of the team was in attendance this week, pleasing the coaching staff and making for a crowded football field. Koren Robinson and Pat Williams were both excused for personal reasons, while Napolean Harris was given the afternoon practice off to prepare for his wedding. The camp gave the entire coaching staff a chance to look at a few new bodies signed since last May's minicamp.

The list of new players signed since last minicamp is actually quite long. On May 18th the Vikings acquired fourth-year wide receiver Billy McMullen from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for rookie free agent Hank Baskett. The 6-4, 215-pound receiver will wear the #84 jersey, a number not claimed since Randy Moss wore it from 1998 to 2004. The next four moves all occurred within a week of one another. On June 8th the team signed defensive lineman Ross Kolodziej followed by wide receivers Kevin Kasper and Josh Davis on June 13th and offensive lineman Khreem Smith on June 15th.

With the addition of the two wide receivers in the middle of June, the Vikings released third-year receiver Jimmy Redmond. Both Kasper and Davis will compete for time on special teams, specifically at the kick and punt return spot.

    Williamson returns

After missing much of the off-season workout regiment because of surgery to remove an abscess from his left hip, former first-round pick Troy Williamson participated in this week's minicamp. Williamson, now wearing #82 after dawning the #19 jersey during his initial season, looked speedy throughout the camp. Any question about whether or not he would be rusty was answered on Tuesday during the offense vs. defense part of practice. On the first play of the drill, quarterback Brad Johnson heaved a long pass down the left sideline for Williamson. It looked as if Johnson had out-thrown Williamson, but the speedy receiver closed well on the ball and nearly made an improbable grab. Although it wasn't a completion, the fact that Williamson caught up to the ball on the first play of the drill ensured all watching that he hadn't lost a step.

    Whitaker impresses

Vikings defensive back Roynell Whitaker provided the highlight of the day during Tuesday's morning practice. During the offense vs. defense drill, rookie quarterback Tarvaris Jackson attempted to hook up with receiver Kelvin Kight deep along the left sideline. It looked as if it would be an easy connection, until Whitaker caught up to the play and came close to making a phenomenal finger-tip grab.

    Vikings in the community

The entire Vikings organization has been busy throughout the community over the past few weeks. On June 8th, the entire organization teamed with KaBOOM! to build a playground and beautify the landscape at the Wenonah School in Minneapolis. On June 12th, Matt Birk hosted his annual golf tournament to raise money for the HIKE Foundation. 17 current Vikings joined Vikings alumni, other Minnesota celebrities and registered guests to help raise money for the Foundation. On June 15th the Vikings held their annual golf tournament which benefits the Vikings Children's Fund.

A lot of good thins are being said of Roynell Whitaker. I'm anxious to see him play & see for myself what he can do.
