With all the success the Vikings run defense had last season, their pass defense didn't look nearly as good by comparison, which explains why the team spent so much money on those needs in the offseason. And the Vikings are hoping their investments pay off...

Re: Vikings defense focusing on fundamentals
As they should focus on fundamentals.
We have the talent in the secondary to match up with anyone, we need to focus on fundamentals, never give up on coverage, and minimize(preferably eliminate) mistakes.
I don't really see us having an outstanding pass defense statistically this year, just because of the amount of passes our defense is going to see again, however, expect the effect from the opposition's passing game to be decreased. We won't give up nearly as many big plays, fewer TDs, but we'll still give up a lot of completion and a large amount of yardage. The added pass rush this off season should really improve it more than anything.

I'm hoping for more sacks, but more importantly, more turnovers off of more pressure.
Boy, we really missed Pat in that first preseason game!
I hope he gets some reps tonight, I'd really like to see the Four Norseman of Pass Rush on the field together!!Control the line, control the time, and give your D a chance to shine!!

Re: Vikings defense focusing on fundamentals
I expect our pass defense to improve due the the fact that I believe teams will try to run more on us this year to the outside. GB exposed a weakness in our run D last year and in watching the line this year, I feel that teams will act to counter the rush of Allen and Edwards by calling more draw plays in their direction.
IMO we will gain some in pass defense and lose some in the run game.

Jared Allen isn't a pass rushing specialist, he's an all around player.
Just like any DE he might think its a passing down and rush and get beat but luckely
we've still got linebackers, corners, safeties back there.

Allen has the ability to also contain runs. I know he is a great pass rusher, but he also can hold his own against runs. Still, we are weaker when teams run to the outside of us. It is too early to panic after just one preseason game.
We didn't blitz much if at all which is where we get a lot of our pressure.
Hasselbeck was able to sit back and just throw underneath with all the time he wanted (most of the time).
I think once we start blitzing more, we will see exactly what we are expecting and that is a big year!

But on a draw play he won't be playing the run. That is a huge difference. Seattle did it to him where he took an aggressive upfield rush and the did a draw play right to his gap."UffDaVikes" wrote:

We had a great pass rush defense in 1989 with 71 team sacks and if you remember those games the draw plays and screens were our Achilles heels then too.
I am not saying we will drop to the middle or the bottom of the pack in rush D, but we will probably slip a few spots. It will be worth it if we yield fewer yards per drive than last year

Re: Vikings defense focusing on fundamentals
I don't think the run defense will suffer much.
We might slip from #1, but we will gain in the pass defense.
Teams will not be able to use the pass as much as they did in the past and will try to run a little more this year.
