I thought the article was fairly ambiguous.
I was under the impression if Birk went down, Whittle would likely replace him.

I'm a homer when it comes to Cook since I've watched him play here in Albuquerque during his college days and my wife is friends with his Mom, so not to sound too biased but, I really do think he is going to be a force to be reckoned with down the road in the NFL. I was very happy when we picked him up in the draft (Hank Baskett too being another Lobo, but I don't want to open that can of worms). Cook has the physical attributes, that's for sure. He just needs some playing time now that he has been able to see and learn from the pros up close. And, by next season, I think Viking fans are going to start to see why he was drafted in the second round (it can be argued that he was drafted too early, but let's wait a few years to make that judgement). It's hard to let a specimen like him pass you by. I don't feel that Cook's huge size will hinder him if he is going to be used at center, it didn't at the college level with average size QB's behind him. I wish him only the best and hope he has a great career in purple.

Its always hard to judge when someone hasn't played and, being taken in the second round, there is a lot of expectation on him. Like Kramer I hope he does get his chance to show why the Vikes picked him where they did and make a few people realise that talented players aren't always obvious when they get picked up !
