Re: Vikings | Birk won't play for less

I know different players heal differently, but we all remember priest Holmes, I don't think his injury is as severe as Holmes, and look at what he did. He set the mark for most TD's in a season, before Alexander took him this year.

I don't think Birk wants out, he is more of a man than Pep anyways, if he wants out he will say so. Besides, he was going to play this past season, if the Vikings were going to give him an extension. Birk was born and raised in Minnesota, I am sure he want to end his career here.

Sid Hartman, of the Star Tribune, reports the agent for injured Vikings C Matt Birk (hip, hernia) recently was quoted as saying, "Under no circumstances will Matt Birk play for the Vikings for one penny less than what his contract calls for," which is $3.94 million in 2006. Owner Zygi Wilf was reportedly surprised by the statement. "If Birk can play football he will be paid his contract," Wilf said.

Thats pretty much what it sounds like to me!
Sounds to me like an open & shut case.

Birk: Hey throw a hint out there I want a raise.......

Agent: I don't know Matt, remember last time I talked out loud?

Birk: Yeah I do, now listen this is your chance let them know I want a little bit more money don't screw it up.

    Agent: Matt.......I'm Scared

Birk: Look I'm Ivy league, I wrote down what I want you to say on a note card. It reads ~ Matt Birk will absolutely not be playing for the Vikings unless he gets a few pennies more then what he makes now~

Agent: Easy enough lets do this................

Agent to Wilf: Matt Birk will absolutely not play for the Vikings.......unless you pay him...EXACTLY what you said you would!

    Wilf...........um......ok.
LMAO, I'm glad to see your secret agent spyware that you ordered from the box-tops of your fruit loops is working. That is exactly what happened.
I got a picture of his agent too...........

    Don't get me wrong,

I think Birk is one of the top 5 Centers in the league, when healthy..

I'm just concerned how well he will come back from his injury.....

I also believe, players have a hell of a nerve to ask for MORE money, coming off a big injury, espeicaly an injury that's kept you out of the game for a year or more..

As is the case with Birk and is also the case with PEP...

But the team should uphold the last contract in place, and if anything, offer a performance bonus to be paid at the end of one years playing time..
Like in Birks case, you start at center next year, you grade out high in your games and at the half way point of the season if he's still playing strong, throw him some dow.....
Finishes the whole season, more dow.......Playoffs and Super Bowl, more dow and new contract for the next year..

    Thats fare to both sides......
Matts not asking for more money, he's simply saying he won't take a pay cut.

Birk will be fine.....but risky. Two torn hip labrums in an athlete that utilizes lower body strength & leverage is a major concern. Make no mistake, the Vikings will monitor his situation closely and may draft a suitor in later rounds.
