Re: Vikings’ behavior just might not matter

First of all, I AGREE, the product on the field (and winning a super bowl) would certainly create pressure and do more to get a stadium deal done than anything else, and as a fan of the team, I for one would love to see the team get one but, dont kid yourself into thinking that the character issues that have been displayed by past members of the vikings organization has not played a part into why the team continues to struggle in their fight to get a deal done. Is it the #1 issue (of course not) is it the #8 issue, I dont know? But, unfortunately, their are a large number of influental (and wealthy) people in this state who dont give a damm about the Minnesota Vikings. Truth be told, they put a whole lot more importance on what exibit is coming to the Guthrie as compared to who we drafted this year.
Anytime you try to enter into a discussion as to why it makes sense for the team to get a new stadium, inevitably, someone says, "I have never been to a game in my life and dont intend to so why should I have to pay for it? Let the billionaire pay for it himself" or heres another one I've heard "Why should we build a new stadium for a bunch of guys who spend as much time in jail as they do on the field".
The state of Minnesota is a mixed up mess. They have no problem funding every social issue known to man and there seems to be no shortage of cash when it comes to making sure that all the illegal immigrants have proper medical care and housing. But the economic situation in regards to sports teams in Minnesota has dried up and so any excuse that can be used as to why the money should not be spent (ie character issues) will be used whether it is deserved or not.

If the Vikings want a stadium, they have to turn the corner and become an elite team. That's the bottom line.
False. Money is the bottom line. The Cardinals just got a new stadium, and they have been terrible for as long as I can remember. Its always about the money.
Hit that one RIGHT on the head there. It is all about MONEY ... and right about now there is not much of it going around. A lot of newer stadiums went up ... or were approved to be built ... during the economic boom of the 90's ... that boom is long gone and getting funds for a stadium is EXTREMELY difficult.
Hell, here in D.C. the Nationals CLEARLY needed a new place to play ... and it was a very difficult process to get them one.
As long as CITIES and STATES are expected to fund facilities for OWNERS that reap all the benefits ... then owners are going to continue to bag up teams and move them elsewhere. It has become common in the last 25 years ... the Charlotte Hornets, Seattle SuperSonics (are all but gone), Los Angeles Raiders, Cleveland Browns, Houston Oilers, St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Rams, Vancouver Grizzlies, Hartford Whalers, Winnipeg Jets, Minnesota North Stars and Quebec Nordiques have all changed addresses after attempting to hold a city hostage for more funds and for new stadium deals.
Because of these situations ... billionaire owners of teams such as the Seahawks, Mariners, Arizona Cardinals, Texas Rangers, Pirates and S.F. Giants have successfully held their cities and states hostage and got billions in public funds for their stadiums while not having to ever pay back those funds with monies earned.
That is about 20 teams that have held their areas hostage for stadiums while threatening to move. The fact that Wilf is NOT threatening to move (at least yet) is classy and a good thing, but it is likely they will end up moving unless Minnesota ponies up, because OWNERS are no expected to take care of playing facilities anymore ... state taxes are.

It is funny how often that happens. The St. Louis Cardinals leave ... St. Louis builds a dome for the Rams. The Oilers leave ... and Houston builds a home for the Texans ... the Browns leave ... bring em on back for the new stadium Moddell kept asking for. The Hornets ... fuck ... better build and get the Bobcats. Happens EVERYWHERE. If they were going to build it eventually anyways ... they should have just kept their teams in town.

The Nats suck!!!! Hence no stadium,
Teams with great fanbases have no problem building a stadium. How do you build a great fanbase? Win some superbowls. Look at the Patriots. I didn't even know what a Pats fan was until they won a superbowl. The bandwagon riders come out of the woodwork when Championship talk is spewing. Money is important but that money will come from coporate sponserships and regional agencies when the team starts winning.

Re: Vikings’ behavior just might not matter

It's not even a matter of winning Super Bowls.
The Twins have a lot of history with their two championships but a lot of the reason they got a stadium was because they were a bunch of scrappy players making big news winning the division over and over.
Not to mention the whole contraction debacle got fans all fired up.
If the Vikings can come out this season and win the division and hopefully win at least one playoff game it will help their chances considerably.
Winning the division with our "new" Vikings will wipe out the love boat scandal and negative opinions of the team really quick.
All the Vikings can do is go out and try to win ball games and hope everything else falls into place.

    Yes, it is that awful.
    A pathetic stadium.
Is there a worse place to attend an NFL game?
    I can't think of one.

I disagree. I think I am in the minority but I love the Metrodome. Yes, bathroom lines suck sometimes but you have to learn the tricks. Don't go to the bathroom at halftime or end of the quarters. At least we don't have seating like lamblow. Nothing worse than no cup holder for your beer and having to fat people next to you hogging your spot on the cold steel bleacher seats.
