Asper and Jefferson aren't on the practise squad they are on the regular 53 man roster

Vikings claimed Asper from waivers so to pop him onto the practise squad they'd have to waive him, hope he clears and then sign him to the practise roster. Jefferson was a trade for a pick....would also need to be waived and clear the waiver wire before being signed to practise roster. So they are both currently on the active roster.

Thanx for the clarification. I didn't realize there was a requirement to place a player on the active roster if he had already been waived by another team.

If I recall correctly, a player taken off another teams practice squad has to be on the active roster for at least 3 games before he can be placed back on the PS. How long does a player claimed off waivers have to be on the active roster?

You can waive him the next day if they want, he just hit the waiver wire again. When you grab a player off of waivers you do assume his current contract, if he has cleared waivers then you can write up a new contract. The problem with waiving guys after the season starts is the cap hit, when the Vikings waived Moss they were on the hook for his salary against the cap but since he was claimed by the Titans it became their hit(remainder for the year), if he had cleared waivers the Vikings would have taken the hit no matter what he was paid by another team.

I thought practice squad selection went first time with priority picks all the players they want, then 2nd team picks, then 3rd (which is the Vikings). Didn't think waivers had anything to do with it.

Thanks to Josdin for the awesome sig!

Not to mention Jefferson took Zack Bowman's spot on the 53 man roster and Asper took Patrick Brown's spot. If they were going to the practice squad, they wouldn't have had to cut those guys.

The only thing waivers has to do with it is when the teams made all their cuts to get down to the 53, the players all had contracts and had the 24 hours to be on the waiver wire to give another team a chance to pick up that contract. Once the 24 our period is done that contract is dead and the player is essentially a free agent and if he meets the practise squad criteria he can be signed by anyone its a free for all. At the same time if there was a homeless undrafted player available the day of the final cutdowns a team could pop him on the practise squad at that moment.

But a claim of a player that is on waivers follows that draft order criteria so if two teams select a player on waivers the team with the higher pick (crappier team ) gets him
The full list of Saturday waivers claims

Six players attracted two claims; no player drew three or more claims.

Browns: LB Tank Carder (Dolphins also made a claim),
Colts: LB Sergio Brown (Giants also made a claim), T Mike Person (Seahawks also made a claim)
Raiders: T Willie Smith (Giants also made a claim)
Buc's: C Cody Wallace (Redskins also made a claim)
Cardinals: LB Jamaal Westerman (49ers also made a claim).

WTF? We couldn't get a starting warpig and a deep threat receiver along with a sure tackling, speedy, linebacker off the waiver wires? Freakin Spielman doesn't know what he's doing.

Vikings fill out eight-man practice squad, add two receivers | StarTribune.com

The players included on that squad are running back Jordan Todman, cornerback Bobby Felder, defensive tackle Chase Baker, offensive linemen Kevin Murphy and Tyler Holmes and defensive lineman Ernest Owusu. All of those players were in training camp with the team.

The two outsiders brought in to fill out the practice squad were receivers Tori Gurley and Chris Summers.
