    Viking Team Analysis - Defense

It has been proven that the Defensive Line is the most important area of a defense. The Vikings have had a mediocre DL at best the past years. This year though, the Vikings looked to make their line better. The Vikings re-signed Lance Johnstone. The biggest downside to Johnstone is he isn’t an every down player and that is what the Vikings have been using him as an every down player. Then throw Brommel into the mix. Brommel is fast and is good against the run, so he will take over for Johnstone in certain situations. That should help Johnstone's sack total and help the Vikings Get the pressure on. The other side of the D-line is anchored by Kenny Mixon. Mixon showed a good ability to get after the Quarterback AND a good ability to get after the running back. So that Brings us to the Middle. Chris Hovan is a force. It is hard for teams to contain him with 2 guys, let alone 1 guy. The Vikings realizing this went out and drafted Kevin Williams, and excellent pass rusher in the middle and good at stopping the run. How are team expected to block these people? One guy will be in the backfield almost all the time, and that doesn't account for any blitzing we do. The Vikings will have one of the best Dlines in the business next year, no doubt.

Next The LB corps. Chris Claiborne, Greg Biekert, Henri Crockett, Roanall Smith, and E.J. Henderson. Are all guys who could start and potentially be Pro Bowlers. The Vikings do have the best LB corps in the business.

The Excellent LB corps, plus an excellent DL means the Vikings will have one of the best front 7 guys in the league, and will more then likely improve a lot the already top-10 ranked run defense we had last year. It will also pressure the QB as far as sacks and pressure on the QB by making him throw the ball all the time. That’s where our Pass defense comes in.

This year the Vikings knew they need a veteran CB with at least 4 years left and a veteran CB almost ready to retire to help out the young CBs. They got a great cover corner with Denard Walker a guy who can really shut a WR down. And Ken Irvin, who can come in and make a difference in Nickel Packages and tutor Kelly, Williams, Scott and another other young CBs we get. Then they switch Chavous to Strong Safety were he can use his strengths more, a brilliant move. Chavous can tutor young hitter Jack Brewer who can hit hard, and cover well also. Opposing QB will have trouble getting the ball to their receivers in the Secondary. I think this is probably the place where the Vikings are going to improve the most.

This years Vikings Defense won't be the defense like we had with Tony Dungy as our Defensive Coordinator but it will a lot like the one we in '98, maybe even better...
