Re:TJack or Sage - who to trade?

The thing is we really don't need to carry 4 QBs...nor should we. Favre is a tank..how many consecutive starts has he got under his belt? And even if he should go down we have 2 more backups. Absolutely no sense in keeping 3 backups.

Re:TJack or Sage - who to trade?

I hope we can keep em both honestly

I don't care for Sage.. But I think as a 3rd option (Possibly 2nd) we would be in good shape

I have high hopes for Webb.. I hope if we try to move him to PS we actually gets on it

People thought Thigpen would easily make the practice squad, too.

Not making any statement about Thigpen as a QB, but the situation is very similar.

Any time you put a player on the practice squad you are taking a risk that someone else will take them.
We have a talented team and some good players that have potential will be going to other teams.
I'm not so sold on Webb that I would be devastated if he got taken.

Quick question? What is the practice squad? Which is better for developing a player, 3rd string or practice squad?

Exactly ... it is always a risk. But, considering he was on everyone's draft board as a WR and the fact that most teams have their top 3 QBs lined up already ... it would be unlikely he would get grabbed. Not impossible, but unlikely.

Hell, everyone thought the exact opposite with Booty, but he made it through for a little bit before he was claimed by the Titans.

Bottom line ... is due to contract, talent and experience issues, I personally do not see us cutting T-Jack or Sage and I do not see a real suitor for a trade.

Re: TJack or Sage - who to trade?

I too have a lot of trouble assuming that the Vikings actually want to keep the project and trade either Sage or TJ.

Even if Webb doesn't make the practice squad, so what? He has shown very little promise thus far, and everything that the FO has done this year has centered around winning it all in 2010.

Nothing that we get in return for TJ or Sage will help us do that. A project QB won't help us either. This year must be treated as Super Bowl or Bust on all fronts. Cut Webb.

I know what my answer is to the question - but will you trade one Super Bowl in 2010 for 5 years of 4-12 or worse?

The Vikings front office has to think about life after 2010. And in 2011, there are only 2 QBs currently under contract - Rosenfels and Webb.

Re:TJack or Sage - who to trade?

I would go with Tarvaris over Sage, and that's what I expect to happen. Zeus did a pretty good job summarizing some of the plus/minuses. I don't think it is completely one-sided, but I think the edge goes to Jackson. The thing I would add is that from all appearances the coaches seem to see it that way, as Tarvaris has been ahead of Sage on the depth chart for the past year and there has been no indication (as far as I can tell) that it is a fluid situation.

I'm absolutely mystified on people's take on Webb. The only thing the fans have seen out of the guy has been one drive. He looked good and finished the drive by dropping a nice fade pass in for the TD. I guess we'll see more over the next few weeks, but I predict we will not get a chance to see if he makes it to the practice squad.
When the age of the Vikings came to a close, they must have sensed it. Probably, they gathered together one evening, slapped each other on the back and said, "Hey, good job." - Jack Handey [Deep Thoughts]

The thing about Webb is, to me, that we know he's a project, sure. But there needs to be a long-term solution for the QB position. IF we accept that that is NOT TJack - then who? Why not Webb? He (according to the reports) has the tools, just not the experience.

    Good thread with good replies.

I agree with those that don't believe either Sage or TJ needs to be traded. Joe Webb's chance of being a star QB in the league at this point is extremely small. I would have a hard time keeping him on the roster just in case the marble lands on green. When I've got a much better chance of it coming up black or red (insert TJ and Sage here).

The future QB situation does need to be addressed, but I don't think counting on Joe Webb is the answer. I also don't think that any franchise can expect to bring in a QB and put them on a 5 year project in the hopes they will become the next great thing. If you have a young Peyton Manning leading your team, then by all means take the fliers. If not, you need to get more serious about bringing in real talent at the position.

My answer, since we have won ZERO Championships is yes. However, more importantly is your willingness to deem Webb a "long-term solution".

If the front office is thinking that way, we are in huge trouble. I would rather have them continue to treat TJack as the long term solution. Webb just shouldn't get any respect, because he hasn't earned any. If we gave him the reigns, we would almost certainly need to have a veteran QB, a la Brad and/or Gus. So why not just keep Sage and TJ?

Am I saying the solution is already on our team? No, but I think Webb makes the situation worse. I would rather keep Sage and TJ this year, which gives us max insurance behind the old man, and draft a QB in a high round (as opposed to where we got Webb) next year.

That is all assuming Webb doesn't make the practice squad. There are tons of solutions which simultaneously have us keeping the best 3 QBs and keeping our future in tact. I remember what a mess the DE situation had become before we got Jared Allen. We can find a long-term solution in many different ways.
