Is it time to eye the record books yet?

I recently watched AD's record setting performance against the Chargers again, and it got me thinking...

We have one of the best, if the the best, rushing duos in the NFL.
How close are we to being the best of all time.

Just some FYI for NFL team rushing records records that could very well fall to us... maybe even this season.

Most Rushing Attempts, Season, 681, Oakland Raiders: 1977
    Wow.
Last year we fell WAY short with only 494.
In fact, Tennessee had the most with 543, still well short of the record.
I think Oakland will keep this one for a while longer.

Most Consecutive Seasons Leading League, Rushing, 4, Chicago Bears: 1939-1942
We led the league in rushing last year, so we are on pace to break this one in 2010...

Most Yards Gained Rushing, Game, 426, Detroit Lions vs. Pittsburgh Steelers, Nov. 4, 1934
    We came close.
The Vikings rushed for 378 on that glorious day against the Chargers.
I could see this record going down.

Highest Average Gain, Rushing, Season, 5.74, Cleveland Browns, 1963
    Again, we were close.
The Vikings averaged 5.3 yards per carry last year... with AD out for four games.
This is another one in danger of going down.

Most Touchdowns, Rushing, Season, 36, Green Bay Packers, 1962
36 is a pretty impressive number.
We led the league last year with 22.
    Possible, but not likely IMHO.

And the big one that everyone is thinking about...
Most Yards Gained Rushing, Season, 3,165, New England Patriots, 1978
Once again, that is a HUGE number.
We led the league with 2,634 last year, so it is within reach.
But I wouldn't put money on it.

FYI, most of these rushing records are from a different era of football, before the passing game became what it is today. But that doesn't mean that they are untouchable...

Interesting post, the sky is the limit for this team, but that is just on paper a lot of things need to go right for any of these to happen.
Of course the vikings set a few records in 07, hopefully the trend continues.

I don't know that any of those are really able to be grabbed by us. I think the rushing average per season would be the best shot. As for the total carries, total yards, yards in a game and TDs in a season ... all of those were set in a different era when rushing was the name of the game. Even with our team set as it is ... we will be throwing more than those teams did.
I mean the yards in a season is somewhat in reach ... and I guess if All Day goes for 28 TDs or so like I hope then we could make a run at 36 TDs in a season.
I would love to see this rushing attack make a run at leading the league five years in a row though!

It could happen in '08. I am very excited about AP in the 2008 season. I can't wait. I can't prove this (like much of what I post here !
;D), but it seems to me that the second year is the "breakout year" for a lot of the best backs. But AP has already done so much.

It is exciting to think about. I can't wait for the season to start.

And like a doofus, I didn't pick AP last year in fantasy, because my "sources" only predicted he would get 750 yards rushing !!

    One game at a time.

First I would like to see us go down the field on the opening drive and score like we have for the last 2 years, but then follow that up with being able to score on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th drives with regularity.

If we can do that and it leads to victories I will start to look at records etc. Until then one game at a time.

I think that was what chilly was aiming for.

I will be ecstatic if we can utilize these running backs for some long, sustained drives.
Too often we have explosive plays as our only driving force.
these are great, as they rile us up in the stadium, but the defense needs its rest.
that's the main reason i am so happy to see running becoming our main focus.
with that done, it will allow some dump passes to go for great yardage with the D crowding the line.
in addition, it will eat enough time off the clock for the williams brothers to rest up an wreak some havoc!

Re: Is it time to eye the record books yet?

Our opponents have AD's number. If they continue to stack the box & we don't have success preventing them from doing so with our passing attack, AD will be hard pressed to even get 1,000 yards this season.
