Three Vikings make SI's All-Decade Team

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/magazine/specials/2000s/12/05/nfl.decade.team/index.html

    OG Steve Hutchinson
    Teams in 2000s: Seahawks, Vikings
    Seasons in 2000s: 9

The best guard of the last 20 years. He's not the same today as he was three or four years ago, but this is a decade award, and he's the best masher and pass protector of any guard we've seen in recent years. Just ask Mike Holmgren how absolutely irreplaceable Hutchinson was to what Seattle did as an offense. The downfall of Holmgren in Seattle can be traced to GM Tim Ruskell losing Hutchinson in free agency after the two men agreed Hutchinson had to be kept.
    DT Kevin Williams
    Team in 2000s: Minnesota Vikings
    Seasons in 2000s: 7

Williams missed the first three years of the decade while at Oklahoma State but quickly made up for it with 22 sacks in his first two years. At 6-5 and 311 pounds, he's the classic strong but lithe defensive tackle who plays the run and rushes with equal proficiency. Williams missed only two games because of injury in seven years, but does have the StarCaps four-game suspension hanging over his head for 2010.
    CB Antoine Winfield
    Teams in 2000s: Bills, Vikings
    Seasons in 2000s: 10

It pained me to leave Ronde Barber off the team, but to these eyes no corner has combined cover ability with physical play like Winfield. At 5-9, he's a rock-'em, sock-'em robot with the quickness of a classic tight-cover guy. Because he plays so hard, it's hard to knock Winfield for his 22 missed games in the decade. Others will have more stats than his 19 interceptions over the decade, but not many corners will ever have a 94-tackle season, as he did in 2003 with the Bills.

Thanks to Josdin for the awesome sig!

Wow ... that is some nutso love for Winny.

I love Winny and all, but the guy has only been to one Pro Bowl. Ronde does the tackling thing and also makes more plays in coverage. Ronde is also a three-time All Pro. Leaving Ty Law out is also tough.

Pretty nice to see Winny get some love though. The K-Will and Hutch picks are obviously no-brainers.

thats pretty cool. Not sure about a couple things though

The downfall of Holmgren in Seattle can be traced to GM Tim Ruskell losing Hutchinson in free agency after the two men agreed Hutchinson had to be kept.
Umm.. didn't Holmgren say he would be leaving after the following year, and then left? He wasn't fired, or forced to resign, he left on his own terms.

And Kevin Mawae? They attribute him to the success of Chris Johnson, but he's only been here two years. last I checked a decade was 10 years, not two. What about Saturday? Birk? Kreutz?

As well, two left guards and two left tackles? I don't lik eit. Give the right side some love

and for WR, give it to Ward over guys like TO or Harrison? I don't lik eit

I'm still not sold on Winfield either. The guys good, but guys like Ty Law, Ronde Barber, even lito sheppard deserves some consideration.

    Re:Three Vikings make SI's All-Decade Team

Although it kills me to say this, But I agree with Midgensa JK on the Barber over Winfield pick-It is the Decade team, He's one of only a couple of players (Can't remember exactly) with 25 sacks, and 25 Int's. Don't get me wrong-I love Winny, Easily our best member of the secondary.

The decade team for LB's can't leave out Zach Thomas, He was a leader, A 6 time pro bowler (Fletcher has 0) and a tackling machine. Also A strong case for Urlacher can be made.

The OT's are fine, Can't argue with Jones and Ogden, Two probable HOF guys, Pace would have been right there if he hadn't tore his tricep in 06, and hasn't been near the same player who was so dominant the term "Pancake" was coined for his flattening D lineman.

Last but not least, The DE spot with Smith on it over Freeney and Peppers is a huge stretch IMO, Both of those two averaged 10+ sacks a season for the entire 2000's

IBP-Mawae is a 6 time pro bowler at center in the 2000's I think it was the correct pick, edging out Kruetz. You're right about Ward, Harrison, and T.O. both could be in that spot without much argument.
Even if the Vikings lose, I can still find happiness in Bears, and Packer losses.

Definitely surprised about the Winfield nod. Would have thought it would have been Ty Law (four time Pro Bowler in the decade, 32 picks), Barber (five time Pro Bowler, 33 picks), Chris McAlister (three time Pro Bowler, 21 picks, very definition of a shutdown corner) or even Dre' Bly (38 picks).

    Re:Three Vikings make SI's All-Decade Team

I love the fact that Antoine Winfield is finally not underrated anymore. It seems like most people finally realised how great Winfield is after last year's Pro Bowl selection. His interception in the Pro Bowl was an excellent way to end the season.

Winfield is, without a doupt, the best cornerback against the run. No one is even close in my book.
I can mention a bunch of guys that are better against the pass than Winfield, but Winfield is solid enough.

Winfield might have been a little overrated in that article, but I will ignore that because he has been underrated for so many years.

Kevin Wiilams and Steve Hutchinson is good choices, and they deserve it.

Hutch is the best guard in the past 20 years? He is a great guard but not even the best Viking guard in the past 20. Has he heard of Randall McDaniel?

I like Winny too but no way he is better than many CB's in the past decade. He is a great tackler, but in coverage....

    Still, nice exposure.

What a chucklehead. I am so glad I dropped this rag.

Course, anyone who goes out on a limb and tries to compare players is just asking for it.

Just like MVP discussions, all a waste of time.

Sure, there is no way to accurately compare players, even if they do play the same position during the same era. However, I think it makes for a compelling discussion, don't you?

I guess, if there isn't anything else to talk about.

I don't know, I guess I get a bit to riled over "Individual" things when it comes to what I believe is the ultimate team sport.

Mix in that I am very upset with a few things SI has done of late and ole negative [strike]Nancy[/strike] Marrdro will immediately emerge.
