Theory: Offense makes defense bad???
this is just a theory, I haven't thought is compleatly over, so I ask you to see what you think of it.
There was another topic that talked about why our defense has been bad over the years. they talked about scemes, lack of linebackers, and so on. but I think it MAY have to do with the offense and the style of play.
Lets look at the top four offenses last year. All of them were over 25th on defense. also 7 of the top ten were over 17th on defense, with only one in the top five (denver).
Now to the top ten defenses. 6 of the top 10 are over 16th on offense. and only one in the top five (denver again).
So I think a good offense that moves the ball and scores leads to a bad defense. Why?? i'm not quite sure. it may be an uptempo game plan that prolongs the game and the scoring. it may be teams spend more money on offense, so they don;t have enough to spend on defense. I don't know.
any thoughts???Make love to the present, fuck the past

Lots of reasons.
You touched on some key ones.
also keep in mind defense is harder to play then offense.

Re: Theory: Offense makes defense bad???
Our offense can cause problems in so much as we either striked quickly or went 3 and out most of the time. Our defense wasn't rested and wore down as the game progressed.I'd like to hope we can get some long run play time consuming drives going when the time for that comes.

Re: Theory: Offense makes defense bad???
Look at the corelation between kickoff teams and good defense. When the opponents are starting every play on their own 35-40 instead of >20 it makes a huge difference.
Especially when your offense is so dang good and they score quickly. That's putting a tired group of guys on a short field.
It plays a big part in what you can call, what you dare to call when they are trying to defend a 60 yard field and are continually withing striking distance of the goal.

Re: Theory: Offense makes defense bad???
That's true as well our special teams weaknesses were obvious last year. I was thinking back to the playoff game with the Packers when we had the two picks in the second half which we went 3 and out twice all of which were pass attempts. Your point of a better kicking game would also help in this case as well.

Also, if a team spends a greater portion of the salary cap on one side of the ball, the other likely will suffer. Not always of course, but im sure there's a correlation there.

Re: Theory: Offense makes defense bad???
A good team is one where you can count on both sides of the ball. How many times did you cringe last year when we didn't have the ball late in the 4th quarter with a small lead? On the other hand, if we were down by a field goal or a TD with 1-2 mins left, I would feel pretty confident with our offence last year.
But this year, I think we can feel good about both sides of the ball. A lot more like New England. No matter what situation they were in, you could count on them to do what it takes on both sides (and especially on special teams.
Thanks PPE for the sig.
