ESPN National Football League analyst Joe Theismann sees the Vikings under new coach Brad Childress as many other observers do: unclear.

Theismann was in the Twin Cities on Thursday to play in the 3M Championship pro-am golf tournament and to promote prostate exam awareness for men over age 50, a cause for which he is a national spokesman.

"The Vikings are a team that has the talent to be pretty good, but there are so many 'I'm not sures,' " Theismann said. "The big question on defense is middle linebacker. That has been the Achilles' heel for this team."

After Thursday's round, Theismann was to head to Vikings training camp in Mankato, Minn., to brief himself on the team. He will broadcast the Vikings' Aug. 14 exhibition opener against Oakland at the Metrodome.

Theismann, who spent 10 seasons in the NFL as a quarterback and two as a punt returner, is a fan of Vikings quarterback Brad Johnson.

"He was 7-2 last year, and for his career he has completed 65 percent of his passes," Theismann said. "The question for Minnesota is how quickly the players will come together with two new (offensive, defensive) systems."

Theismann said he thinks it will be tough for the Vikings to make the playoffs because the NFC is tough.

"They could be a 10-6 club or a solid 8-8 club," he said.

Unlike many observers, Theismann believes the Vikings have an adequate backup QB in Mike McMahon.

Well you've done your homework on the Vikes Joe.. just sit on the fence. I'd love to see how he's going to brief himself on the team. As for the NFC- from what I saw last year the NFC was not tough, so unless all the NFC teams have changed all their rosters then I can't see it changing instantly.

Tough? The only team I think that might give us a run, will be the Lions, and that is a big might.

    The Bears......One hit wonder.
Fudge Packers......They have Mr. INT, I don't have to say anything more.
Lions...Look good on paper and with the addition of Mike Martz, they might cause a little problem.

So, where is this tough stuff coming from?

The day will come when the NFCN will re-earn their 'black 'n blue'. I heard Theismann has that excruciating leg break clip as his screen saver....just to keep himself in check. It's not working.

I don't think he's refering to the NFC north. The NFC will be tough this year.
If you look east and northwest as well as southeast there are going to be some pretty tough opponents. And the Vikings have to play some of them.
The NFC is going to be better this year. The AFC will likely be a little weaker based on off season moves.
