Streamlined offensive line means Cook must perform

    http://www.startribune.com/reusse/story/1404491.html
With eight linemen covering five positions, the Vikings are counting on the second-year tackle to develop quickly...

Cook started all of the pre-season didn't he?

I've been asking all week why everyone is talking about MJ.

    Johnson is a guard!!
He is a bag of shit, worthless tackle. (and he gets way to many flags thrown his way. ;D)

Cook is really not much better. Cook has had more flags than Johnson so far.

Re: Streamlined offensive line means Cook must perform

I was as big a critic of the right side of the line as anyone last year.
The right side of the line has played pretty well this preseason.
Cook had a couple presnap penalties but blocked quite well against some pretty good competition. He is likely to improve. Though he will likely have a few more presnap penalties.
Johnson looked good against the Dallas second string. I doubt Johnson will get better. He had more than his share of presnap penalties when he was the starter, and took plays off.
Childress doesn't see Johnson as a guard.
Hicks, who was not even average last year, has had a good preseason and made some nice blocks.
Herrera has been good at times, and I love the fight in Herrera, but Hicks beat him out in my opinion.
The right side of the line is definately better this year.
Birk isn't what Birk was. But he is better than last year.
What takes a quarterback to the next level is not arm strength or mobility or any of that stuff. Its the ability to play on critical downs. Manage third downs, or red zones or four-minute or two-minute situations"

We will have to run right this week against Atlanta to take away some of the speed that rookie DE Jamaal Anderson has. On passing downs we may have to help Ryan out with a chip block, but Ryan has quick feet, and is a good athlete. He'll get better every game.

I would have liked to hear what question spurned this response.
    :

"He's a big, physical athlete ... what you would expect a first-round defensive lineman to look like," Childress said.
Many many thanks to my talented friend Jos for the new Sig.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/josdin00/Vikings/Marrdro_sig.jpg

Re: Streamlined offensive line means Cook must perform

Childress was asked if it was a surprise to see Cook -- so raw as a tackle at the start of last season -- in his 2007 opening lineup.

"I wouldn't say surprised," the coach said. "I thought he had the physical ability to play.

"He's a little jumpy right now, so we have to take care of that. What we like is that we saw him have a great offseason here working with the coaches."

Followers of all NFL teams -- Vikings included -- demand perfection from an offensive line. If the quarterback has time to throw and there are gaps for the running backs, these large gentlemen hear little. If there are false starts, holding penalties, sacks and stuffs, they get killed inside the arena, on the airwaves and in print.

Cook figures to face some of that heat. He's still learning to play "out in space," rather than surrounded by friends in the middle. Plus, he's had to stay familiar with center, in case an injury were to befall Birk.
I don't like the sounds of that quote!
