What's crazy about this entire situation is Brad Johnson is better than Bollinger and Henson.
If he would have been okay backing up in MN it would be great.
I think him leaving was a lot to do with Childress.
Brad didn't like not being able to call audibles when he needed to.
There was definately more to it than just being released.
I think Brad Johnson was terrible last year, and that's why he's gone.
I wouldn't want him as a backup, because I don't think he can win in this league anymore, even coming in for a week or two when a starter is hurt or struggling.
I just don't think he has the physical tools he needs anymore.
While he was never a guy with a rocket/laser arm, he used to be able to get the job done.
    He can't anymore.
I don't know if either Bollinger or Henson (or Tarvaris for that matter) can get the job done, but I also don't know that they can't.

Bringing this back around to the thread topic, that's why I think a lot of analysts like Schlereth are going to be wrong on the Vikings.
They're all imagining that there's going to be a huge dropoff in the QB performance for this team, because they think Brad was a good QB last year.
But last season Brad wasn't the same guy from 2001 or even 2005.
Tarvaris, even if he's not good, should at least match Brad's contribution.
Since I don't see any other areas where we have regressed, I'm optomistic that we'll improve significantly this year.
Our pass blocking and our receivers were terrible, leading in part to Brad's struggles.
Everyone was learning a new offense, and we all should have expected there to be some problems, along with some good things.

If TJ struggles this year, are we gonna want him gone also?
Our will we be willing to give him more time?
    obviously more time.
brad johnson was the oldest qb in the league and though he didn't exactly have the 49ers offensive weapons of the 80's, he still made terrible rookie mistakes and wasn't helping, but hurting the offense.
he didn't have the arm, or any kinda escapibility.
so not only do we have a qb who can makes plays, but we also have more weapons than last year who can also make plays. so say tjack throws 15 picks in 14 games like johnson, at least you get the feeling that he can at least get some of those points back which is nothing johnson did last year.

if robison and james can provide a pass rush, and our running game is as good as it can be i dont see how we are worse or the same as last year.
were very capable of winning 9 games, and anymore i wouldnt be shocked.

I agree that the guys around Brad didn't play well, but watching him it was also painfully obvious that the guy doesn't have an NFL arm anymore.

I agree with almost all of that.
I'm just not sure how many mental, as opposed to physical, mistakes that Brad made.

I especially agree with the last part.
Last year, it seemed like our offense had no chance to move the ball and score with Brad.
At least with Tarvaris he has the possibility of making some plays and getting the ball in the endzone.

Brad never had an NFL arm....just a very solid NFL head on his shoulders.

Brad has never had the strongest arm, but that doesn't mean he didn't have an NFL arm.
He could make the throws he needed to.
I don't think he can anymore, based on what I saw last year.
It's one thing to float a 40yd pass to a receiver streaking down the sideline, it's another thing to float a 5yd out that ends up going the other way for 6.

And the head wasn't there last year, case in point, how many intential groundings did he have?
Inexcusable for a seasoned vet to make dumb mistakes like that.

And don't get me going on how many times he checked down to the back coming out of the backfield vice hitting the WR last year.

(I'm sure the "It wasn't BJ's fault - B-chill called those plays" crowd will come out of the woodwork with that statement) :

I still love the guy though.
He is and has always been nothing but class.

I was happy when Brad came back to play with the Viks.
But I do believe his age and caliber of play is on the downside, even though his heart and mind are as big and full of life as ever.

Can't say much of anything bad about the guy.....A true player...

Here we go on the Brad Johnson topic again.
Although I admit, Brad didn't have a great season last year, it wasn't like he played poorly every game.
It was only a couple games he played poorly.
What people fail to realize is he wasn't the bulk of the problem.
Any QB would have struggled like BJ did last year.
Remember we led the league in presnap penalties.
    We had many dropped passes.
We had other penalties that negated big plays.
We had a struggling O Line.
All that contributed to BJs problems last year.
Throw in the fact he couldn't call audibles which was a big part of his game plan prior to last year.

I don't want to keep going on about BJ.
He's gone now but people have to get a clue that last year was not all BJs fault.
    His arm is fine.
Its not a rocket but he can throw the ball long enough.
Unfortunately when he did the WRs dropped them.
For people that know the game of football his arm had enough stregnth to get the job done.
It was the rest of the offense that made his life more difficult.

Comeon ladies and gentlemen, I gotta throw the bullshit card again.
We aren't talking about pee wee football here.
All QB are given the choice of an audible at the line.

What, Who, When, states that he wasn't able to audible.
I don't want to see any drivel form Tom Powers either on it.
I want to see something from the Chiller or one of our QB's that say they weren't allowed to do it.

Honestly Marrdo, I'm not going to take the time to find anything but didn't someone post an article on here a while back regarding this issue?
Or maybe it was a post that I and many others took to be true.

Regardless of that people need to be aware that BJ was not the sole reason or even the main reason for the Vikings offense not scoring a lot of points.
It was a team full of penalties, dropped passes and O Line not protecting very well.
If the not being able to call audibles you can throw that in.
The fact is I watched just about every game and usually you can tell if an audible is being called unless it's Peyton Manning.
I can't remember seeing a whole lot of adjusting to the defenses with the Vikings offense last year.
Sure BJ made his share of mistakes but people need to stop putting the bulk of the blame on him.
