There is plenty of land in the TC area. It's not set in stone that it has to be built in downtown Minneapolis. If Wilf doesn't buy the parking lots and other land, the team will move out and there will be no reason to "tailgate" then at all!
The stadium in Anoka was about as close as Wilf was ever going to get to a new stadium without the backing of the MSC or Hennepin County.
Downtowns have been on the decline since the early 90's (if not longer), and they are just starting to see a resurgence in population and retail development.
I think Wilf is betting on that trend, and stands to get a larger return on investment in the downtown area.
The Twins stadium, the Gophers stadium, and soon the Viking stadium are big players in a revitalized downtown Minny.
The MSC and Hennepin County need Wilf as much as he needs them.Zeus wrote:

Vikings owner Zygi Wilf made a promise to Minnesota. He would never move the team. But keep in mind, he never promised that he wouldn't sell the team...

I am really hoping this comes back into play. There is also a chance the NFL will re-instate a new stadium loan program that numerous other teams used over the years to help finance a portion of the overall stadium cost. The commissioner, Roger Goodell, is 100% behind that. Not all of the owners are, but the Vikings would embrace it.
We have a lot better chance at getting a stadium deal passed with it.Zeus wrote:
