Udeze to have arthroscopic surgery
September 30th, 2005 3:09 pm by Judd Zulgad
Kenechi Udeze, the Vikings’ starting left defensive end, will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee next week. The Vikings are working on scheduling an exact day for the procedure, according to athletic trainer Chuck Barta.
Udeze, who was downgraded Friday from doubtful to out for Sunday’s game in Atlanta, injured the knee in last Sunday’s victory over New Orleans. He has a chondral defect and also some damage to the meniscus.
“He’s still having some ongoing symptoms in there and the symptoms are getting progressively more and more [with] fluid in the knee and things, Barta said. “So we’ll go in there, take a look at the meniscus and take a look at that chondral fracture.
Barta said he could not put a timetable on how long Udeze might be out. The Vikings have their bye week after Sunday’s game but if enough damage is found Udeze certainly won’t be able to return in time for the Oct. 16 game at Chicago.
Spencer Johnson will get the start at end in the base package with Udeze out and rookie Erasmus James will be used in the nickel and dime packages.
The Vikings also downgraded two other players on the injury report Friday. Free safety Darren Sharper (knee) did not practice and went from questionable to doubtful. Sharper will miss his second consecutive game Sunday. Running back Moe Williams (knee), meanwhile, went from probable to questionable and most likely won’t play. Rookie running back Ciatrick Fason has been told he will be active for the game.
The rest of the injury report looks like this: Cornerback Brian Williams (knee) and receiver Nate Burleson (knee) are out; defensive end Lance Johnstone (shoulder) is listed as doubtful but has said he won’t play; weak-side linebacker E.J. Henderson (ankle) is questionable but plans to play with a brace; and middle linebacker Sam Cowart (knee) will play.
Linebacker Dontarrious Thomas (hamstring) and receiver Koren Robinson (headache) were removed from the injury report.

Re: Spencer Johnson to start, Udeze out.
Man that sucks.. Udeze was probably our most consistant lineman right now except Fat Pat.. We need K-will to step up his game hardcore!
Re: Spencer Johnson to start, Udeze out.
Don't worry - I talked to my son today and he guaranteed me he'd be able to play against Chicago.
He promised me 3 sacks.

James, show me something!
Re: Udeze out for the year?
Did they say anything about the possibility of him being out for the year? Or are you just trying to get us wound up?
Re: Udeze out for the year?
This isn't what I heard - I heard that he was having surgery and was out for tommorow and questionable against the Bears.
And I think I would know. After all, he is my son.
Re: Udeze out for the year?
Sounds like he'll be back, but not until at least the Packer game. It depends on the amount of damage.
