Re: Special Teams Improvement The Product Of Buy-In
It's always nice to take over as coach when the predecessor did a terrible job....“I just think there has been great buy-in,†Childress said. “Brian (Murphy) and Chris White (assistant special teams coach) have done a great job of teaching those guys and that goes through the whole offseason.â€Â
The Vikings special teams unit received a face-lift following the promotion of Murphy to special teams coordinator this past offseason and the subsequent addition of White and Jason Glenn as Murphy’s assistants. The special teams staff is in its 1st year together, but you wouldn’t know it from the progress that’s been made since the offseason...
I'm glad they're performing well this year, makes a world of difference.Get your facts first, and then you can distort them as much as you please. Mark Twain

Re: Special Teams Improvement The Product Of Buy-In
I posted this in the 'midseason grades' thread as well.
Here are a couple of interesting stats:
Longwell ranks 25th among kickers for attempt/distance of the kicks he has had 0 Touch backs, and the Vikes are averaging 21 yards per KO returned against.
Kluwe ranks #21 among yds/att(43) but has 15 punts w/in the 20, 3 touchbacks, and 8 faircatches, 17returns/133 yards and 1TD
Harvin 28/860 30.7 avg yds/return 2 TDS 4th in yds but tied for 1st in TD's
The turn around with this group of the team is probably the most impressive.
They were terrible last year and they have absolutely reinvented themselves.
But as I have said before Farwell being back is HUGE, not to mention the outstanding play by Ohanatolu, Brinkley, Sapp, Paymah.
Great job Vikes!
