    Smoot benched for disciplinary reasons

    NFL.com wire reports

MINNEAPOLIS (Sept. 25, 2006) -- Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress hinted that cornerback Fred Smoot did not play the first series against Chicago because of disciplinary reasons.

When the defense stepped on to the field for the first time against Chicago, Smoot stood on the sideline with his hands on his hips while rookie Cedric Griffin started.

A radio report during the game said Smoot had an issue with his helmet that kept him from being in the game and Childress did not address it during a brief postgame news conference.

But on Sept. 25 Childress said, "That's between Fred and I. I'm not going to put it off as a helmet issue, no."

Smoot went in for the second series and played for the rest of the game, except for missing a few plays after being shaken up on a tackle in the second half. He declined comment after the 19-16 loss and once again in the locker room at the team's headquarters Sept. 25.

It's not the first time Childress has disciplined a player this season. Starting safety Dwight Smith was deactivated for the season opener against Washington after being cited for misdemeanor indecent conduct outside a Minneapolis night club.

    thoughts etc?

Why is Fred Smoot always in the spotlight for the wrong reasons? I've never been a fan of Smoot or his big mouth (except having to root for him as a Viking on the playfield in which I have no choice). As far as I'm concerned, this guy needs to be jettisoned from our squad after this season. I just wonder if we could get something for him via trade. Let's give him another fresh start somewhere else.

I am really starting to get on my last nerve concerning Fred Smoot. He is really starting to turn into a bust. He really hasnt had a great game for us yet and all his hype has keep him outta the spot light for now. I really dont think it will last much longer however , because people will start to realize that he is the one who is always getting burned. I really hope he can turn things around as he really is a decent player. But until that happens I am a little worried when he is on the field.

I watched Smoot ALOT yesterday and even pointed out to Webby that Smoot is not as advertised.
Even with his added muscle from the offseason, just is NOT a physical corner and makes a TON of mistakes in coverage.

I made up my mind yesterday, he has to GO.
Yup, you heard me right, end of the season he has to go, as he is no where near worth the amount of money the Vikes are paying him .... the LB's and Safeties are constantly covering up for his mistakes on the field.

    Just my two cents.

I am starting to think that we should have kept B-Will here and happy and tried to get rid of Smoot.. He is playing nothing like he did for Washington.. He guaranteed a better season this year and blamed all of his problems on the old coaching staff.. Looks like he has only himself to blame now..
