I was surprised at the intensity shown by both the SF players and fans during the game. Listening to the crowd roar and watching the SF players flying around the field, you'd have thought the game was being played during a critical time of the season against an arch rival. We were there just to see who was going to shine enough to make the roster.

P.S. Way to go Webb!!!

You haven't even seen the game and you are ripping on people for bitching?!

Yes, I am. It was earned and deserved.

I don't need the preseason to judge Peterson on blocking. Last year prove that he is not good at it.
Last year proved that he wasn't good at it last year. It proves nothing about this year.

Just because somebody says he can't block does not mean that the person said he is horrible.
For the record, although I have paraphrased a bit, every single one of those comments I mentioned was made by someone.

    Really!?

FYI most the criticism I have seen is fact because I watched the game and within reason.
I don't need to see the game to recognize when people are going overboard with highly emotional negative comments about the preseason. Criticize, sure, but keep it civil and offer some suggestions on how to improve, instead of just ranting and calling for heads to roll.

As for today's comments, it looks like more people are agreeing with me now. As is typical, a break of a few hours can bring reason back to the forefront. To my mind, it just isn't worth getting so worked up over something that is essentially meaningless in the greater scheme of things.

It certainly does sound like a fair number of player-hopefuls earned themselves a set of walking papers. Just as well, since most of them will have to go soon anyway. That's what preseason is for.

    Thanks for the feedback.

    Re: The sky is falling!

Meh ... it is just how people are with the preseason across the country.

The fact is ... this coaching staff has never put much stock in the preseason. They are very secretive in all that they do and have always went out there in the preseason VERY vanilla on offense and very all over the place on defense.

I happen to still have the last two season's preseason games on DVR as well and was watching them as well as this season. There are a few things that are clear about preseason with this staff (true of other teams as well, though all staffs have their own ways):

1 They feel like "showing" anything on offense can hurt them in the preseason. They call VERY basic pass patterns and running plays and are more worried about players getting a rhythm for the game and 40-second clock than trying to put together long drives and "showing their cards" so to speak. I don't necessarily love this approach, but it is the approach they take.

2 On defense, they OFTEN tinker with blitzes that they really use in regular season, and often allow their corners to be tested without much help. I think this is to "see what they got" and again not to "show their cards." The defensive line for the last two seasons has looked very relaxed throughout preseason. Not like they are not trying, but not like they are going all out either.

3 For whatever reason, this staff DOES care of special teams in the preseason.
I think this is very true of a lot of teams, because this is where a lot of tweeners either make the team or get cut. It is also where the "less" talented players play, so the staff seems to want to really work them and get them in shape by the beginning of the season.
These are just observations from watching a decent amount of our last 10 preseason games over the weekend.

I don't really agree or disagree with the philosophy, but Childress and Co. definitely put more stock in their own practices than preseason games. They do seem to take preseason Game 3 a little more seriously than the others ... but they still go pretty vanilla.

That is why I don't put much stock in it. I figure a good preseason for us involves more of not getting hurt, and just getting some rhythm more than actually going for big drives and making big plays.

Seems to have worked so far for this staff, so I don't expect much to change.

    Re:The sky is falling!

One thing I will say about Childress and his preseason approach is that he has a plan, and he sticks to it.

He is vanilla on both sides of the ball.

I believe that he views the preseason as a chance to evaluate talent, and see how some people/packages go together.

I beleive he and his staff have a game plan going into the game, as to what they want to see, and they do not change it.

Childress is a detail type of guy. My gut feeling is he is using preseason games to work out the details. When you think about it, there really are probably only a couple of plays that seperate you from the roster and the cut list. Whether or not they occur in practice or game situations.

We pulled our stars pretty early in the game, and San Fran left their stars in longer if I am not mistaken. That will make a difference.

Who cares if we win or lose in the pre-season? The real question is how did we play, and who did what well, and who did what wrong. I think Childress plans his preseason games out to find those answers.

I do have concerns about our Offensive Line. I had the same concerns as last year. Even our starters did not look good. However, it is hard to judge based on a series or two.

One thing I did notice, is once Gerhart came in, we ran an awful lot of screens. We did a couple in a row once (which led to TJ throwing into the back of an OL)

I'd say thats part of the plan to evaluate the new talent, and see what TG can do.
