Sasser and Rosenthal To Have Season Ending Surgery

    Vikings lose two for season

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Just two weeks into the season, the Vikings' highly-touted depth at tackle and tight end has been stretched to its limits by a pair of devastating injuries.

Right tackle Mike Rosenthal and tight end Jim Kleinsasser both are expected to have season-ending surgery this week and will be placed on injured reserve, head coach Mike Tice said late Tuesday.

Rosenthal, injured in the second quarter of Monday's loss at Philadelphia, was diagnosed Tuesday with an injury to the Lis Franc ligament in his right foot. He will need surgery to insert multiple screws and stabilize the injury.

The injury is considered serious, but not career-threatening.

Meanwhile, Kleinsasser was close to opting for surgery on the partially-torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee after meeting with a specialist Tuesday morning.

Kleinsasser, injured in the Vikings' season opener Sept. 12, received a second opinion Tuesday from Birmingham-based physician James Andrews, who recommended the surgery.

A final decision on Kleinsasser's status will be made by the end of the week, Tice said.

Both players signed long-term, lucrative contract extensions before the season -- signs of their importance to the Vikings' offense.

Now, their inexperienced teammates are left with the task of replacing their fallen comrades midseason.

Adam Haayer replaced Rosenthal on Monday, but struggled in pass protection and committed two penalties.

Haayer will start Sunday's game against Chicago, but rookie Nat Dorsey also will see action.

Tice hopes Dorsey, a fourth-round draft pick in April, will be ready to start Oct. 10 in Houston. However, Haayer could retain the job with a solid performance Sunday against Chicago pass-rusher Adewale Ogunleye.

The Vikings likely will activate guard Adam Goldberg for depth.

The tight end situation is equally uncertain, especially since backup Jermaine Wiggins will miss at least one game with a fractured bone in his left end. Wiggins' injury will not require surgery.

Rookie Richard Owens shined Monday, and will see extended action along with Jeff Dugan this week.

The only silver lining to the injuries: The Vikings avoided making a difficult roster decision to accomodate the return of defensive end Kenny Mixon, who was reinstated by the league Tuesday after serving a two-game substance-abuse suspension.

The club would have been forced to part with a defensive linemen -- most likely seventh-year veteran Chuck Wiley -- to make room for Mixon.

Placing Rosenthal and Kleinsasser on injured reserve will leave one spot open on the 53-man roster. The club will audition several offensive linemen and tight ends for that spot next week, Tice said.

I saw that the Cards let Everett Lindsay go earlier this year. Maybe he still has something left in the tank. I seem to remember that he was pretty versatile, able to play all five positions along the line or something close to that. If the Vikes offense is still similar to when Denny coached, then maybe Lindsay could slide right in and be effective immediately.

I'd like to see him back..., particularly now that we're suddenly thin on the O'line. Im sure Tice will give him a chance if he thinks he's capable.

My buddy from GA (Dirty Birds Fan) says that the jury is out on Dorsey. My friend also follows GA college ball and was not particularly impressed with Dorsey, but what does he know! I think that Dorsey looks good on paper, but if the Vikes are going to add another OL then it might as well be one that has been here before. If he has something left, that is.

Probably more of a 'Dogs fan, so that may be why he doesn't like Dorsey. I was working in ATL on arbitration case before and after 9/11. Our offices were in the Bank of America building and around noon that day, security kicked us out as they thought that the building was a target. We were sent to our rooms (The Georgian Terrace, a block away) for safety reasons. I couldn't understand it because if the building was hit, I figured that it would fall on where we were staying anyway. Bad period in history, but the people there were awesome and treated us like we were family during that crisis. The office had a great view of GTech's stadium (no games though) and was not far from The Varsity.

I would think we bring in a tight end since we lost wiggin and kleinny for now. Too bad we couldnt bring hunter goodwin out of retirement. He was a valuable blocker as well and an average receiver. It could be lindsay as well but i see we sign a te.

Byron Chamberlain is out there, he was cut by Denver he could at least provide some depth.
What we've got here is failure to communicate.
