There are number of Vikings players involved in heated training camp battles this summer, but veteran kicker Ryan Longwell isn’t one of them....

Well I hope the competition in the kick-off department is heated. I'm tired of seeing the ball come down at the 10-15 yard line.

Yeah, Longwell is solid but his power is below average. It especially shows on kickoffs. I wish we had room for a kickoff specialist.

You hit that one right on the head V.....couldn't agree more.
His kick-offs are constantly landing around the 5 to 10 yard line area......Not good enough...

Come to think of it, Kluwe seems to have a hammer for a leg, very powerfull...wonder how he would do with kick-offs?

Kluwe's stats shoe two kickoffs in his 2 year career, for an average of 49 yards. That is miserable. I guess his power comes only from dropkicking.

Longwell averages 61 yards over his career, but they moved the kickoff line back to the 30, so he is usually 10 yards short of the endzone.

Touchbacks in general are a lot more rare than they were a decade ago.

Re: Ryan Longwell doesn't need any competition

it seems like he's making nice progress..

people recognized that he wasnt kicking the ball as far as we wanted him to... so he's working on it and says he's imrpoving..

it'll be nice if he actually does..

Longwell’s name is already prominent in the NFL record books. Since joining the league in 1997, he sits fourth in field goals made (247), third in scoring (1,144 points) and seventh in career field-goal percentage (247 of 302 for 81.8 percent).
    DANG!

He was about 25th in the league in kickoffs last year with a touchback percentage of less than 5%, he had three.
He was very accurate on field goals inside 39 yds..

The hype was based on the premise of better performance in the dome.Apparently that only applies to accuracy and not distance.
I can't find the statistic for average opponents starting position or kickoff distance despite searching. But I know that the opponents starting on the 20 instead of the 35 makes for a lot less pressure on the defense.
My theory is short kickoffs can cost as many games as accurate field goal kicking win.
I can't prove it and I'm probably wrong, but I think there is some anectdotal relationship at least.
What takes a quarterback to the next level is not arm strength or mobility or any of that stuff. Its the ability to play on critical downs. Manage third downs, or red zones or four-minute or two-minute situations"
