A real shame...
A terrible wrong is going to happen next Sunday, a wrong that is as wrong as wrong can be. A punter, Jeff Feagles of the Giants, is going to tie Jim Marshall's record of playing in 282 consecutive games, and then the following week will break it by playing in his 283rd consecutive.
A PUNTER.
A punter will break the record of the Ultimate Iron Man, former Viking defensive lineman Jim Marshall, a man who, compared to today's wimps who take a game off for a sprained ankle, embodied the true spirit of the NFL more than any other Viking player I know: Playing for the Love Of The Game.
Back in Marshall's days, there weren't the salaries you see today; there wasn't the specialization you see in today's players, who only play on special teams, or only on third downs; there was a comraderie among teammates that you don't see in today's babied and pampered stars of the gridiron.
Here are some amazing stats for the days of the Purple People Eaters:
"The Minnesota Vikings set a standard for defense in 1969 that remains unfathomable. That first Super Bowl team allowed six points in the first quarter and a total of 133 in 14 regular-season games.
The charge led by Alan Page, Carl Eller, Jim Marshall and Gary Larsen created 49 sacks for 409 yards in losses.
Soon, they were being called the Purple People Eaters _ with Doug Sutherland taking over for Larsen during the 1974 season. From 1969 through 1976, the Vikings held opponents under 200 points seven times in eight seasons and went to their four Super Bowls."
Now THOSE are football players, REAL heroes of the gridiron. They sure don't make them like they used to. I hope to God Jeff Feagles suddenly comes down with a bad case of the flu and can't play next Sunday, or suddenly retires before the weekend.
Because personally, even though I don't know Jeff Feagles, he can't be the type of Sunday Hero that Jim Marshall was.
Here's hoping Feagles get a really bad case of turf toe... :wink:PPO Ambassador, Defender of the Purple Faith and Guardian of the Gates of Valhalla

That record does not count for crap! He's a fricken punter for crying out loud!
Even more fuel for my hatred of the Giants.

Re: A real shame...
A punter never sees the type of hitting & bone-cracking that Marshall has delivered during his tenure!
Marshall will always be tops in my heart for his record.

Re: A real shame...
It is something to be said about any guy that can stay in the league that long, even a punter and then play that many games straight.
It doesn't take anything away from what Jim Marshall has done on the field.
Yeah, I wish Jim could keep the record but still, you can't take anything away from the impact he had on the field, it is only a silly record.
Records are meant to be broken and legs, acl, mcl, and pcl aren't.
BTW, is Favre still in the running for that or did his streak end???
I will have to pull for Favre if a punter breaks Jim's record.

Re: A real shame...
Jim Marshall. A hero.

Personally, I don't think there is intelligent life on other planets. Why should other planets be any different from this one?
