Ray Edwards books another boxing match




Vikings defensive end Ray Edwards says he’d rather be a boxer than a player for the Vikings, so it’s no surprise that he’s planning to box again.

Edwards, who won his pro boxing debut last month, will fight Larry Butler on June 24, the Star Tribune reports.

Please take careful note of three things...

1: Jared Allen said that Ray "deserves a contract"...he didn't say a BIG contract, just a contract. No one here disputes that.

2: Jared said that Ray has a finite amount of time to get "What he can"...again, something no one here disputes.

3: Jared ALSO said that Ray's departure won't cripple the Vikes...something most of us have also already said.

So, how is what Allen said controversial?

Is he threatening to hold out?

Is he saying he won't play for the Vikes?

Is he demanding a raise, then lowering his performance bar?

Is he REPEATEDLY placing HIMSELF ahead of his TEAM?

Is he changing careers - or threatening to - because he can't get his way (despite the FACT that the Vikes can't offer him ANYTHING right now anyway!!)

Nope....Ray is doing all of that.

Allen is just saying what all of us are - Ray deserves a contract, but probably not for what he wants. And the Vikes will miss him, but not all that much.

Alright....the vast majority of those who have posted have agreed that he deserves a contract...it is the size of that contract that is subject for debate.

That said, due to Ray's perceived attitude, most here are also completely willing to part ways with him.

Personally Edwards could leave and I wouldn't give a crap. If he would shut up and play football I'd be more than happy if he stayed with the Vikings with a contract they think he's worth. Not a contract Ray thinks he's worth.

And there in lies part of the problem.

What Ray thinks he's worth & what some fans think Ray is asking for are two different things.

Ray is not asking for some outlandish salary like many here believe. There's no evidence to support it.

Ray has simply stated he feels he should be paid more than his back up [Robison]. If in fact Ray would be the starter going forward, he would be correct & deserving to be paid more.

Not much to argue about there.

It's the fans who think Ray is asking for boatloads more than he's worth. Not Ray.

Where is your information on his salary demands coming from? I don't remember any specific numbers being released on his behalf in terms of salary or years. Please feel free to repost them if I missed them so we know exactly what he is looking for.

While I agree with Singer partly in that if he's the starter he should be paid more than Robison. However, I will go back to his "I" mentality and his insubordinate behavior throwing the organization under the bus publically.

Like I stated I could give a crap if he goes because of his mouth. If he stays, shuts up and plays football I would be happy. Unfortunately, I don't think Ray is capable of doing that. The fact he gets upset with a 127% raise last year when the rest of the world is struggling turned me off to this guy. The fact is he still never proved himself to be a top notch end. He has been solid. That's it. Not that I complain about that. It's the fact he thinks he is much better than what he is.

Oh yeah, btw, I do remember a little tidbit last year where he thought he was worth like $7M and he wouldn't be able to get that due to being a RFA vs a UFA. Maybe I'm wrong. I'm just going on memory.

According to Tom Pelissero of 1500ESPN.com, Larry Butler decided not to proceed with the June 24 fight. Both Butler and Edwards launched their professional boxing careers on May 20 at Grand Casino Hinckley, the site of the fight that now won’t happen.
