When asked about the game-changing fumble recovery in the Green Bay Packers’ 34-31 win over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, Green Bay Packers tight end Ben Steele and Minnesota Vikings cornerback Derek Ross told identical stories.

    Well, sort of.

The Vikings had just tied the game 31-31 on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Daunte Culpepper to Moe Williams with 1 minute, 29 seconds left in the game. On the ensuing kickoff, the Packers’ Robert Ferguson returned the ball 37 yards before Vikings defensive back Antoine Winfield forced a fumble.

The loose ball was recovered, and the same player held on to it until the ball was given to the referee.

On this fact, Steele and Ross are in complete agreement.

What’s in dispute is which player had the ball.

“I had it the entire time,” Steele said. “I fell on it and never let go. There wasn’t any doubt in my mind I had the ball.”

Steele may say he had the ball, but Ross said he was the one who recovered the fumble.

“If everybody sees it on film, a white jersey is on top of the ball,” Ross said. “I’m going in with two hands, and all of a sudden I’ve got one hand and (Steele) was pulling my arm out. We’re at the bottom of the pile for 2 minutes, (so) eventually he’s going to win that one. I don’t think the referee did a good job of getting everybody off the pile and see who’s got the ball.”

While Minnesota appeared to initially gain possession, that was before there was a huge pile of bodies on the field all scrambling to get the loose ball.

“There was scratching and clawing under there,” Steele said.

“I was completely cramping up, but I wasn’t going to let go of the ball. I didn’t let go of it until the ref said, ‘Come up 82, you have the ball.’”

Picture here shows a good angle on how close the grab was. This picture shows no one had possession at that moment and Ross and Steele both literally inches away from grabbing the ball in what would seem to be at the exact same moment.

Whats funny is Steele was cut by the Vikings, several Vikings players stopped by and congratulated him after the game. Class move.

Didnt you watch the video, Ross got ontop of the ball then he was touched by a Packer. Therefor its the vikings ball, Ross had position before anyone elso did but unfortunatly they didn't call it before Steele could take it from him in the bottom of the pile.

This doesnt help your argument, becuase ross had first possesion of the ball PERIOD. Go to topic "Video of the Fumble". There you will see the truth. Vikings had possesion refs screwed vikings again.

Did you even look at the picture? which was at a MUCH better angle then the Video. In the video Ross' body blocks out what Steele was doing, it blocks out where his hands were. The picture doesnt, it shows clearly the closeness and uncertainty of the grab.

In watching the video for the 12th time, you see that the ball is still loose, and remains loose as Ross' body turns and were shielded from seeing whats going on or wether or not he finally wraps it up. The link to the pic above however shows that angle that the video doesnt see.

That picture was takin before ROSS had the ball pined between his body, how can you even argue this, your wrong. The only people that believe the call was called correct is the ignorant packer backing bandwagoners we have here. Everyone knows the refs f*cked up, I'm dealing with it but you need to exept you got that sh*t handed to you.

The ball pinned between his body WITH steeles hand in there as well. Your precious video doesnt show that, the picture does. How can you argue with the clear picture over a video that only shows Ross bumbling the ball in his grasp and then turning his body to block any clear evidence of him securing it and grabbing it by HIMSELF. The picture shows the ball still loose and Steele's hand just as close to it as Ross' PERIOD.
There are facts about this fumble. 1) Ross' admits in his own words he lost it in the melee (if he ever clearly had it) 2) upon clearing the pile, the ref saw Steele with the ball, a contention again proven by Ross' own admission. 3) When the ball comes loose and all hell breaks loose its NEARLY impossible for a ref to make a split second call for one team or the other. Therefore they must see who came up with it. Again... Ross' admits he lost it in the pile. Green Bay ball. Deal with it and concentrate on the Lions.

Ahhh, because the picture you posted is about 1 second before Ross wrapped up the ball.
Why not show a picture of the packer returner just when the ball was knocked out of his hand? Because its irrelevant thats why....
The video clearly shows Ross covering the ball and according to the rules, it should have been Vikings ball.

I wouldn't have a problem with them congratulating him, if he actually recovered the ball on that fumble!

It doesnt matter if the picture was pulled of the Packers site, the Vikings site or Dr. Kevorkians kiddie porn site. It doesnt lie. it shows Steele just as close to grabbing the ball as Ross, where as the video doesnt. And I'll say it once more, this entire fact that is being argued is really moot anyway as explained a few threads back by myself.

Like I said before, it definitely seemed like Ross fell on it. but thats it, it SEEMED. Of course to you fine Vikings fans it %100 percent was recovered by Ross' Just like if it was us on the other end I would likely be screaming the same thing.
