Re: Q&A with Bob Sansevere: Scott Studwell: 1987 Vikings best I've been around

Excellent read my friend.
Thanks.

BS: You had to wait almost a decade to get recognition with Pro Bowls and other accolades, yet you were a good player from the time you joined the Vikings, weren't you?

SS: I think what happened was that all the guys who were the best players in the league and were peers of mine at that position got old. And they didn't have anybody left. (Laughs) All the postseason accolades and Pro Bowls are great recognition for your play, but that's icing on the cake. It's not why we play.
Love that line.

BS: You played with Carl Eller, Chris Doleman and John Randle, and you've watched Jared Allen play. Who's the best pass rusher of that bunch?

SS: I probably would say Johnny Randle.
John was our whole defense at one time and was still unstoppable.

It's about time that Studwell was inducted into the Ring of Honor.
A true Viking and one of my all-time favorites.
Congratulations Scott!

Re: Q&A with Bob Sansevere: Scott Studwell: 1987 Vikings best I've been around

Scott Studwell the forgotten man -
He should be in the Hall of Fame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Scott Studwell 1977-1990
9th round draft pick

1,981 combined tackles
(average of 142 total tackles per year)

(Viking team record)

He has the most tackles by 1 player with 1 team in NFL history.

1,308 solo tackles

Viking record
(average of 94 solo tackles per year)

230 tackles in 1 season

24 tackles in 1 game

9 sacks
(His 1st few years in the league sacks were not an official stat he might have had more)

11 INT's

15 fumble recoveries

Lead the Viking's 8 times in tackles.

At least 5 season's with over 200 tackles (maybe more hard to find the stats)

His 1st 2 years he was a backup behind Jeff Seimon.

Only a 2 time probowler in 1987 - 88 but a big reason why he didn't make more probowls was Mike Singletary with the Bears who is in the Hall of Fame, so let's compare them.

Mike Singletary 1981 - 1992
2nd round draft pick

1,488 combined career tackles
(average of 124 total tackles per year)

885
solo career tackles

(average of 74 solo tackles per year)

19 sacks

7 INT's

12 fumble recoveries

Scott Studwell should be in the Hall of Fame and it's a disgrace he was never seriously considered and a big part of that was Mike Singletary and the Bears defense was the media darlings of the 80's.
Singletary was getting all the probowl appearances and because Scott only got 2 probowls affected his chance to get to the Hall.

Again at least 5 times Scott was over 200 Tackles in a season he maybe had more.

Tackle leaders NFL 2003 to 2007.

2007
Patrick Willis

174
total tackles
2006
Zach Thomas

165
total tackles
2005
Jonathan Vilma
169
total tackles
2004
Keith Bulluck

152
total tackles
2003
Jamie Sharper

164
total tackles
What we've got here is failure to communicate.

Excellent stuff my friend.

Just goes to show that a SB, spin by the sports hacks mean more than stats.
Only reason alot of Vikes aren't in is because they haven't won the big one and the "Advocate" for them sucks.
