Predict the Vikings 2014 Roster

Never too early to predict the 53-man squad!

Offense (24)
QB (3) Matt Cassel, Teddy Bridgewater, Christian Ponder
RB (3) Adrian Peterson, Jerick McKinnon, Matt Asiata
WR (5) Greg Jennings, Cordarrelle Patterson, Jerome Simpson, Jarius Wright, Lestar Jean
TE/FB (4) Kyle Rudolph, Rhett Ellison, Chase Ford, Jerome Felton
OL (9) John Sullivan, Matt Kalil, Phil Loadholt, David Yankey, Brandon Fusco, Charlie Johnson, Vladimir Ducasse, Joe Berger, Antonio Richardson

Defense (26)
DL (8) Everson Griffen, Brian Robison, Scott Crichton, Corey Wootton, Linval Joseph, Sharrif Floyd, Tom Johnson, Fred Evans
LB (7) Chad Greenway, Anthony Barr, Audie Cole, Jasper Brinkley, Michael Mauti, Gerald Hodges, Larry Dean
CB (6) Xavier Rhodes, Captain Munnerlyn, Derek Cox, Josh Robinson, Shaun Prater, Marcus Sherels
S (5) Harrison Smith, Antone Exum, Jamarca Sanford, Kurt Coleman, Robert Blanton

Special Teams (3)
K Blair Walsh
P Jeff Locke
LS Cullen Loeffler

That is ALOT tougher than it looks. There are a few cuts that could easily make it (Sendejo, Brandon Watt, a couple of receivers, Zach Line, Jeff Baca, Mistral Raymond)

Looks good!!

You should update this as we get more information, perhaps as people hear different things from the training camps.

Oh ... I will. There are definitely a few tweener spots that could go a few different ways. Also, alot matters as to what it appears that Zimmer will like to carry. Maybe less LBs for more DL, more OL and less TE/FB, etc. It will be fun to watch play out because for a first time in a while I think we have talent in a lot of spots. Young talent at least.

DL (8) Everson Griffen, Brian Robison, Scott Crichton, Corey Wootton, Linval Joseph, Sharrif Floyd, Tom Johnson, I would like to keep Stephen, all we have are 3 techs other than Joseph, Fred Evans
LB (7) Chad Greenway, Anthony Barr, Audie Cole, Jasper Brinkley, Michael Mauti, Gerald Hodges, Larry Dean, Watts, I know what Dean has so let's see if we have more talent with Watts
CB (6) Xavier Rhodes, Captain Munnerlyn, Derek Cox, Josh Robinson, Shaun Prater, James I think he has all the tools to make it, Marcus Sherels

Rather than do my own list, I'll just comment on your projections.

At WR, Lestar Jean isn't much to write home about. I think the battle for the 5th WR spot (assuming there are only 5) comes down to incumbent Rodney Smith, Adam Thielen, and Erik Lora. Smith (AFAIK) is pretty much just a big red zone target, I'd think Patterson and Rudolph can handle those kind of duties. Thielen was said to be impressive in camp last season, but I'm going early for Lora, who was Jimmy Garoppolo's go-to guy at Eastern Illinois.

On the OL, Vlad Ducasse has been a major bust in the NFL. Can't say that Jeff Baca has been impressive yet, but he hasn't had the chance Ducasse has yet. IMO a major light will have to come on for Ducasse to stick. I'll go out on a limb and say that Richardson sticks, Ducasse is cut outright, and (if eligible), Baca is cut but signed to the practice squad. Johnson can back up at both guard and tackle, Berger at guard and center, and Richardson at tackle. I think they can get by with eight guys on the OL.

Don't know that much about Tom Johnson (he's got plenty of experience), but I think Chase Baker stands a good shot of making the squad in lieu of Johnson (assuming they only carry 8 DL).

At LB, I wonder if Gerald Hodges will even make the team after his invisible performance last season. I can't help but wonder if we are done at this spot...what UDFAs did we sign at LB? Any chance any vets from another team get cut based on who that team drafted? Heck, I have to wonder if they won't try and bring back Erin Henderson (if he can beat the bottle). Have to wonder too if Brandon Watts will show something on the field and enough on special teams to knock one-dimensional Larry Dean out of a job.

At safety, I can't understand why so many people discount Andrew Sendejo. Check out how many tackles he made in only 10 starts last season. Yeah, I know he's not the best in coverage, but unless Exum beats him out for the job I wouldn't be at all surprised if Sendejo is the starting safety opposite Dirty Harry. Coleman fell out of favor in Philly, and save for the one year he picked off 4 passes, hasn't really done anything more in the league than Sendejo or Sanford. I think he could be the odd man out.

I think with the one less OL I took than you, maybe the Vikings keep 6 WRs. I think Thielen is the 6th guy...unless they keep AC Leonard and try to convert him to a hybrid TE/WR.

I like urs better. I do see Brinkley making the team and starting at the middle. Chad back on the outside. Brinkley will do well as just a run stopper, and not a cover guy. I see Josh robinson being the outside corner when Munnerlyn goes to nickel. I do believe Antone Exum will beat out Mistral Raymond and Sanford. AC Leonard will beat out Chase Ford..

I would like the young talent also ... but there is little to no chance that Charlie Johnson gets cut. I also think that Watt could be better than Dean ... but right now ... it is Dean's spot to lose. I ALSO agree with James ... but right now that is Prater's job to lose as well. He played well when thrust into the role last season.

You also added Zach Line without taking anyone out. That is the tough part of this.

I agree. Brinkley is almost a lock to make the team.

He will make it as the regular 4-3 MLB ... and when we go to the nickel (often) Greenway and Barr will stay on the field. I don't think Exum will start right away ... but he will ABSOLUTELY make the team.

I think Leonard and Ford are a toss up ... but Leonard was drafted by the current admin.

Don't mind the lineup ... but I find it HIGHLY unlikely that both Fred Evans and Tom Johnson are cut. If they are ... then the young guys showed something. But right now, at least one of those vets is needed. I also find it unlikely the team carries only eight DL when Zimmer likes rotating them so much. Probably 9 offensive lineman max ... and if Yankey wins the starting job and Johnson can back up anywhere ... the squad probably trims it to 8 OL to fit in 6 WRs or five TEs/FBs.
