But really, at this point, it's just a number. If McNabb gets hurt...and with his track record of injuries, that's not out of the realm of possibility...Webb could easily slide into the #2 role. Or, if the Vikings have a ridiculous mismatch with Webb out of the Wildcat, they can throw Ponder in and keep Webb's set of plays untouched, and keep that part of the gameplan in, if, for example, they had Webb lined up wide or something.

The new rule gives the Vikings options, and that's a good thing.

The bottom line for me in all of this is twofold: Both Ponder and Webb want to win the job, but they're also being good teammates about it, and whoever loses will be gracious in defeat and help the other guy as best as he can.

And moving forward, the quarterback position is in good shape long term.

    Whoever that may be.
I pretty much agree with this cat with one exception......

There seems to be a big movement out there that believes Joe will be some sort of godsend when it comes to the "Wildcat" packages.

Here's a clue people, the Wildcat is pretty much a dead scheme my friends. Every team knows how to defend it now. Thats why you won't see more than 10 Wildcat plays from all the teams this year.
    I agree 100%.

If he is not good enough to be on the roster as a traditional QB then we are wasting a spot on him and the Wildcat is now on the endangered species list.

4 days, 16 hours after the other WR has yet another turf toe or hammy injury.

Alot of play on question that was posed to Leslie about Webb and Wildcat packages, but nothing on the question that was posed about him getting reps as a WR, which he has been doing by the way.

Atleast according to the answer Leslie gave.

Re: Ponder, Webb compete to back up McNabb

Buried deep in Tom Pelissero's column over on 1500ESPN.com was a line that stopped me cold. Thursday night's preseason finale, Pelissero wrote, could be "the last extended game action" that Minnesota Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder sees until August 2012.

At one point, that line would have indicated a disastrous beginning to Ponder's NFL career.
Is tonight Christian Ponder's 2011 finale?

Typical media. Already trying to go down the "bust" path.

Anyone who thinks that this kid doesn't have it is absolutely crazy. Go back and watch what he did in the Dallas game. If the Coaches would have had a time out or two or a TE would have got out of bounds or a rookie WR would have made the right route change, he would have been successfull in moving the team down for a score.

    This kid has shown:

    a. Great pocket awareness.
    b. That he can make the right read.
    c. That he can make all the throws, especially on the move.

If I was going to tap a QB to be the number 2 right now, I would definately tap Ponder over Webb. Even though I like Joe and think his runs are fun to watch, Ponder has clearly shown he is the better thrower of the ball and more equiped to run this offense.

Even after saying that, ......If tonight is the last time we see this kid in 2011, who the hell cares. That my friends is a damn good thing cause it means Dnabb stayed healthy and didn't suck it up.

Good thing the author left an out.......That way he can come back later, if Ponder works out and say "See, I told ya so".

It's difficult to gauge how that dynamic will impact Ponder in the long term. For every football person who insists that quarterbacks need sideline development, you get two more who say the only way to improve is through game action. But when I spoke with Ponder during training camp, I got the sense he was perfectly at peace, if not relieved, by the decision to place him on a slower track.
