IMHO part of the OL problems have been that we have both types so the unit as a whole doesn't do either well.

Is the best OT in the draft suited to what the Vikings are going to run? Or at least try to run?
Who gives a crap? Take the top OT in the draft and fire our OL Coach because he's clearly not doing a good job. We need a new scheme. I'll be the first to say that I don't know anything about OL schemes and all that, but what we are doing right now isn't working and what better way to turn around than to take an immense talent like Kalil. If we are committed to Ponder as our future, we need to work on keeping him healthy and upright. Imagine how much better Stafford would be if he wasn't injured his first couple of seasons. I don't want to hinder Ponder's development by having him on the run/injured all the time due to a crappy OL.

I realize the appeal of getting Blackmon, and I would love to add a talent like that to our team, but what good is he going to be with Charlie Johnson protecting Ponder's blindside? We need to address the WR position in FA as some big names will be out there like Bowe, Vincent, or Wayne.
I am NOT here to provide good football insight or rational observations. I am an emotional 19 year old Viking fan and I expect you to adjust your expectations from my posts.

Not sure about you my friend, but I would much rather try to fix our OT problems with a vet over another rook.

That and of course, shitcanning the OL coach.
Many many thanks to my talented friend Jos for the new Sig.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/josdin00/Vikings/Marrdro_sig.jpg

We haven't really had a good OL coach since Tice was coaching them. Yet a whole bunch of talent including a LT drafted at the 7 slot (McKinney ) and yet we are where we were 5 years ago or worse.

    We need a new scheme.
Funny, I thought we just got a new scheme? Or did you mean a new new scheme?

If he fits, great. But just remember, when McKinney came out of college he was also very highly regarded. In fact just for perspective here is a little info on McKinney and his senior season. IMHO he was graded much higher than Kalil is right now:

2001 (SENIOR): Considered by many observers the most dominating player in college football during his senior season...named the winner of the Outland Trophy recognizing the finest interior lineman in college football...finished eighth in voting for the Heisman Trophy, presented annually to college football's finest player...received 26 first-place votes in the Heisman Trophy balloting...a consensus First-Team All-American...named National Player of the Year for College Football by CNNSI.com...was a finalist for National Offensive Player of the Year by Football News magazine...a unanimous choice as First-Team All-BIG EAST by the league's head coaches...never allowed only a quarterback sack in his playing career - not in college, junior college or high school...paced a Miami offense that is the nation's most balanced, averaging 454.8 yards per game (eighth in the nation) and 43.2 points per game (3rd nationally)...keyed an offense that averaged 5.3 yards per rushing attempt and scored 25 rushing touchdowns in the regular season...earned Offensive MVP honors by the coaching staff three times...mainstay of an offensive line that allowed just three quarterback sacks in the regular season...considered by many as the leading candidate to be the first player taken in the 2002 NFL Draft...suffered a knee injury in the season finale against Virginia Tech that required minor surgery, returned to play in the Rose Bowl victory over Nebraska for the national championship.
Now, I am not saying Kalil will end up a bouncer beating, love boat hooker dildoing mountain of crap McKinney ended up being but I am going to say that you have to fit the player to what you are trying or you are not going to see their best performance. Just keep that in mind.

Yep, We do need to address the OL. And we do need a LT. And the best LT for us MAY be Kalil. But if not, there are other guys who can do the job that we can get later in the draft and FA.

I realize the appeal of getting Blackmon, and I would love to add a talent like that to our team, but what good is he going to be with Charlie Johnson protecting Ponder's blindside? We need to address the WR position in FA as some big names will be out there like Bowe, Vincent, or Wayne.
I am not that high on Blackmon personally, but just as with the WR position you can and will need to fix many of the issues on the OL in FA.Personally at this point I am not sure who i really like in the draft.

Ponder's arm strength is suspect. That is not going to improve over time! CUT BAIT! Why do we have to give him more time. Why not recognize a mistake and move foward. No need to hold the franchise up.

And your suggestion in the meantime is.... Certainly can't be drafting a QB at #3.

    Is Ponder your franchise QB?

If your answer is no, then I don't think it is a silly question to ask if we will draft a QB.
If your answer is yes, then definitely no QB at 3 overall.

Whatever we do at #3... Unless it's Khalil, we should take Claiborne or Blackmon, Or RGIII and trade him... If we reach for another player early in the draft (like we did for PONDER), i'll be convinced that they don't know what the hell they are doing... (not that we arent' already convinced of that). Trade down and draft one of those other dudes, but to take a guy that early and leave elite talent on the board would be ridiculous.

Draft the BPA... other than khalil, no OT would be worth that high of a pick...

I agree. If Kalil is not there, we better not take offensive line there. I have no problem with taking Claiborne or Blackmon at No. 3. But outside of that, the pick should be traded because there is nobody there worthy of the No. 3 pick.

RGIII is DEFINITELY going to go to Cleveland at No. 4 ... so some teams should be angling to get our No. 3 off of us and make him their QB of the future. If the Redskins are in love with Griffin, then package some picks with them and move back.

Personally ... I am happy with Luck, Blackmon, Claiborne or Kalil at No. 3 and we obviously will have a shot at at least two of them. But I also would not mind trading back. If we swap with the Skins so they can get RGIII at No. 3. Then we would pick No. 6 and maybe have a shot at one of those four guys falling there.

Suggestion: Go weatherstrip dad's garage, if applicable. I have it on good authority that the major demographic here is 'live at home', and you would stay warmer, appear wiser, and not stand out so much as one of the PPO big thinkers...

    lol lol lol
I thought you were going to say weather strip then turn the car on.

My bad....... I am kinda dark sometimes.

I think as Viking fans, we have been burned too many times on QBs and nobody is good unless they are amazing. That is why we need to have patience and just sit back. This isn't going to get better all that quickly, if it does, I will feel blessed. I am not talking about QB, I am talking about winning consistently and beating the Lions and Packers at home and away.

The thing is... We have holes everywhere... Obviously too many to fix in one draft and free agency...

Problem is, I don't have confidence in our coaching staff to competently mask our holes and make a decent season of things while trying to build a winner...

I have even less confidence that the take time to build theory through the draft will work with the guys we have at the helm.

by the time we build a winner (3 years realistically with this staff) all of our key players will be close to the tail end of their primes.. AP, Harvin, Allen, Williams (if he's still here)

they shoulda just blown the thing up...
