What's your solution to the Smoot situation then???
Branch is gonna Burn him all game next week and is a weakness in our "D" that other teams "O" are taking full advantage of (ie:
Bears, Bills, Panthers this year) .....
    How do we solve it???
I'm not as down on Smoot as you are and how do you know it will be Smoot on Branch and not Winfield? If Smoot does go out then it will be Cedric Griffin who gets first shot at being a starter no need to pay as big of money for a guy who isn't better then Smoot.

I watched the Seattle v. Rams game today on the NFL Ticket, as it was going to be a good game and to see what Seattle ran on "O" and "D" as they will be our next opponents ... Branch lined up solely on the left side of their formations, opposite where Smoot sits with his 7-9 yrd cushions.
Majority of the routes he ran were quick outs, 15 yrd button hooks, slugo's to the corner ... he rarely ran routes over the middle, but had a couple.
Which means, Smoot will be man up on him a majority of the time.

As much as I like Griffin, he's still a rookie and should be soley in a nickel role.

As for Roy Williams having a big day on Clements ... I only switched back and forth a few times during commercials, but doubt Clements was on Roy the entire time.
Anyone watch that game and see anything??
(I doubt it, as anyone with the Ticket to see that game, probably watched the better games anyways ... lol)

They both came in the league the same year, 2001.
    Both roughly the same size.
For comparisons sake, let's take the last two years, since that's how long Smoot has been with the Vikes:

    Smoot:

    2005:
    Games:
    11
    Tackles:
    37
    Assists:
    4
    Sacks:
    0
    Int's:
    2
    TD's:
    0
    Pass Defensed:
    7

    2006:
    Games:
    5
    Tackles:
    26
    Assists:
    0
    Sacks:
    0
    Int's:
    0
    TD's:
    0
    Pass Defensed:
    1

    http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/235244

    Clements:

-- First off, he has never missed a game since being in the league starting in 2001, Smoot his missed 9 games.

    2005:

    Games:
    16
    Tackles:
    78
    Assists:
    21
    Sacks:
    0
    INT's:
    2
    TD's:
    0
    Pass Defensed:
    11

    2006:

    Games:
    5
    Tackles:
    17
    Assists:
    4
    Sacks:
    0
    INT's:
    0
    TD's:
    0
    Pass Defensed:
    5

    http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/235204

Clements is more physical with WR's (this is from my personal observations of both playing), has more assists which to me means he hustles to the ball, has never missed a game since being in the league, doesn't allow 7-9 yrd cushions when his speed has declined (again, personal observations), and doesn't have the baggage.

    Smoots current contract is for:

Fred Smoot signed a six-year deal worth $30 million, including a $10 million bonus.
    http://blog.lib.umn.edu/maasx003/Vikings/017428.html

Brian Williams left us last offseason and signed the richest contract for a CB during that period, with Jacksonville:

Brian Williams--with contracts containing at least $9 million in guaranteed money. The club signed Williams in March in free agency to a six-year, $32 million deal, including $10 million in bonus money.
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/blog/2006/05/24/BL2006052401351.html

So, whatever Clements is currently making and is scheduled to make as a free agent this offseason, will not be more than what Smoot is currently making.

In my opinion, Clements would be a very attractive commodity to the Vikings front office with the lack of production out of Smoot.
Clements still works as a return guy also, which Smoot doesn't.

It would be nice if they could work a deal for Clements. The name that caught my eye that was in the same article was Brian Kelly --- a good DB that Tomlin is already familiar with, plus a much smaller price tag.

Glazer reports that the Cardinals are looking for "a pick or a player," and one G.M. got the impression that the Cardinals are simply trying to unload him.

The most overrated, over-hyped date on the NFL calendar — the NFL's trade deadline — is less than three days away. While significant trades prior to the trading deadline rarely take place, the names on the trade block can point to a handful of subplots and inner thinking inside NFL complexes.

FOXSports.com has spoken with several teams on this and come up with a list of players whose names have been floated from general managers or personnel directors in recent days.

Perhaps the most intriguing phone calls have come from the 813 area code. That would be Tampa. Several clubs have called the Buccaneers' approach a "fire sale." According to seven different teams, the Bucs have offered up such names as DT Anthony McFarland, CB Brian Kelly and a handful of others.

"They said we can take a look at their roster and aside from first-day picks the last couple of years, guys like Cadillac, everyone else they're open to talking about," said one team's GM. "They can't trade certain guys like Derrick Brooks or Ronde Barber but we got the impression they were open to everybody else."

Another team executive said he thought DE Simeon Rice and safety Jermaine Phillips were also included in the group of those players Tampa would be open to trading. It's unclear what cap ramifications would arise from trading a Rice, McFarland or Kelly.

It's not likely that anyone would be interested in any of the aforementioned names due to their salaries but it's interesting that after starting 0-4 the Bucs would take such an approach.

The Bucs are likely to deny such intentions as teams never like to put a player out on the trading block, have him find out, then have him end up staying with the club. However, Tampa was not shy in calling around with their intentions.

By the way, the Bucs were asking for a first-day pick for McFarland according to another GM inside the NFC.

The biggest name on the block is the Bills' Nate Clements — a cornerback who will strike it rich, make that very rich, as a free agent after the season. The thinking here is that Buffalo will lose the young corner, so why not try to get something, anything, for him rather than simply part ways. Whoever trades for him would have to sign him to a blockbuster deal as well. One team did say, however, that they were seriously considering it but weren't sure if they could get their numbers together in time.

Other players on the market include the Jets' Derrick Blaylock, who started half the team's games at running back this year, the Rams DE Anthony Hargrove and Cardinals OT Leonard Davis. Davis has a big number a team would have to take on but it may not be a bad trade if someone would shift him back to guard. Due to the money he's getting paid he has been put at tackle but many inside the league feel he's better suited for the guard slot.

Davis has lost favor with head coach Denny Green and when Arizona called around this week shopping the behemoth lineman it was for, "a pick or a player" or as another NFC GM said, "for pretty much anything, they seemed like they were just trying to unload him."

    Report: Bills shopping Clements
    Nate Clements - DB - BUF - Oct. 15 - 12:34 pm et

Bills cornerback Nate Clements (foot), who is available for Sunday's game, is also reportedly being shopped by Buffalo.
This isn't surprising, considering Clements can be an unrestricted free agent after the season and cannot be franchise-tagged again by the club. If Clements were to go, Ashton Youboty might be active on game days

We don't have the cash to probaly keep him. The Vikings typically don't spend a ton of cap money.
