the pessimism thread :(
pes·si·mism : an inclination to emphasize adverse aspects, conditions, and possibilities or to expect the worst possible outcome.
After a full day of OVER excitement, I'm now having trouble getting to sleep because I just can't stop thinking of all the years that slapped us Vikings fans in the face
:'(
I'm not really speaking of the obvious ones like, 0 & 4 in Superbowls or the '98 and 2000 championship losses or the Drew Pearson push off in '75.
It's the rotten "Murphy's Law" junk that keeps getting to me!
Korey Stringer, Erasmus James, Udeze, Chad Greenway, Herschel Walker, Tarkenton's dad dying while watching the "push off" game and on and on it seems! >
I can't get the visions out of my head that we will be losing one of our key players for the season.
I foresee AP, KW, BB or our newest gem Allen not even getting through 2 games and the season spiraling out of control after that!
Is there a voice of reason in the community that can help me squash this negativity that has suddenly taken over me gulliver?
Please, someone sing me the lullaby of how solid our team conditioning is or the one about the teams depth at key positions.
I want to come back to the land of "duckies and bunnies", but our sordid history is winning the battle right now! >

Re: the pessimism thread :(
Well, injuries happen.
But the guys we have at the top of our roster have been pretty good at avoiding them.
Of our likely top 24 guys (11 starters each side plus a third WR and CB), they've only missed a combined 40 games over the past 2 years.
That's less than 2 games/player.
Almost half of those belong to Chad Greenway's lost rookie campaign.
Even if guys do get injured, we have players that can provide an increased role for a few games without a debililtating drop in performance (QB-Bollinger, RB-Taylor, WR-Allison, TE/FB-Kleinsasser, OL-?, DE-Robison, DT-?, LB-?, CB-Sapp, S-Boulware).
Okay, we may have depth issues at OL, DT, and LB, but hopefully good players will be added through the draft or someone will show something in camp.
Keep in mind that we return 18 of 22 starters on a team that went 8-8 last year with injuries.
Of the 4 new guys, Jared Allen, Bernard Berrian, and Madieu Williams should all be upgrades (to varying extents).
Thomas Tapeh will hopefully be a wash as compared to Tony Richardson, but we only used a FB on about 1/3 of our plays anyway.
Finally, other teams have problems too.
Especially in our division, where our opponents problems this offseason have been worse than ours.
The Packers lost Brett Favre.
The Bears go into the draft with no running game or legitimate WRs to speak of.
The Lions O-line has been terrible for the past couple of years (117 sacks total and 3.9 y/c).
Vikings fans have all the reason in the world to be optimistic right now, so cheer up and get on the band wagon early. When the age of the Vikings came to a close, they must have sensed it. Probably, they gathered together one evening, slapped each other on the back and said, "Hey, good job." - Jack Handey [Deep Thoughts]

Re: the pessimism thread :(
well theres no avoiding pure good or bad luck.
every team is gonna suffer injuries, maybe some are not as devastating but nonetheless injuries.
i guess it is somehow more scary when you feel you have alot of talent, or expectations, but what can you do?
indy and new england are always just one injury away from being in serious trouble if brady or manning go down.
basically what i'm saying is, every time you see one of our main guys on the turf you are going to shit yourself adn theres nothing you can do about it.
just hope for the best or get ready to cry yourself to sleep. how's that for positive thinking.

now self destruction" that's enlightenment

:- Thanks Overlord!
That's all I needed right there!

I think I'll still do a poll just to get a feel for how the community thinks.

That's what comes from your #1A being the Vikings and your #1B being the Cubs.
However - April, 2 days before the draft, after just having nabbed one of the top-5 DEs in the whole league to put next to your Pro Bowl tackles and the offense ready to churn behind Purple Jesus is NOT the time for pessimism.
This is the time for wearing purple-colored full-face-shields and pronouncing OUR team as the favorites.
Those stupid fucking Patriots patented 19-0?
Okay, then.
The Vikings will win the 4 pre-season games and go 23-0 you jackasses!
=Z=
Thanks to Josdin for the awesome sig!
