Pats take Vikings candidate off market

The New England Patriots convinced college scouting director Tom Dimitroff to cancel his scheduled interview with the Vikings on Saturday, according to an AFC East source.

On the eve of his Saturday interview, Dimitroff notified the Vikings that he would not be traveling to the Twin Cities to discuss the team's vacant player personnel director position.

Dimitroff intrigued the Vikings because of his role with the Patriots, a team widely revered for their scouting and development of players. According to the source, Dimitroff was interested in the Vikings' position but felt compelled to remain with the Patriots.

Meanwhile, the Vikings are believed to have interviewed Jacksonville Jaguars pro personnel director Charlie Bailey.

Last week, the Vikings interviewed Fran Foley of the San Diego Chargers, former Miami Dolphins general manager Rick Spielman, former Atlanta Falcons vice president of player personnel Ron Hill, and Bill Kuharich, the Kansas City Chiefs' vice president of player personnel.

The Vikings' two internal candidates are Scott Studwell and Jeff Robinson.

Rick Smith, Denver's director of pro personnel, can be interviewed by the Vikings now that the Broncos' season is over with Sunday's loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC championship game.

The Vikings also might consider Scott Cohen, who worked with new Vikings coach Brad Childress in Philadelphia. Cohen is currently the Eagles' director of pro personnel.

The Vikings are expected to fill the position by the end of the week.

With only two teams still playing, the Vikings might take further strides with their three remaining position-coach openings: linebackers, secondary and special teams.

One possibility for special-teams coach is Carolina special-teams assistant Paul Ferraro, whose Panthers lost Sunday in Seattle. Before joining the Panthers in 2005, Ferraro was Rutgers' defensive coordinator for four seasons.
