Vikings | Deal with P. Williams not imminent
    Mon, 16 Jul 2007 20:32:53 -0700

Sean Jensen, of the Pioneer Press, reports the agent for Minnesota Vikings DL Pat Williams said that no significant progress has been made toward a new deal for his client with the Vikings. "We've had pedestrian discussions. No deal is imminent," said Williams' agent Angelo Wright.

With Pat heading into his 11th season I wonder how many more years he's planning on playing.
He has shown a huge heart and great motor since hitting the field in purple and
I'd like to see him retire with the Vikes but I'm not sure how much ($) and for what length of contract he and the team are envisioning.
Redding is 8 years younger and Pat’s near the crest of his career.
With the size and intensity Pat plays his knees can only have so many miles left in them.

imo we have to keep him around until he's out of gas, even if he cant play at his current level a couple years down the road he's a veteran that can teach these
young kids a thing or two

We can get a couple more good seasons out of Pat.

IMO, I don't think we should give Pat anything more than a 1 or 2 year extension, he's pretty old and we should address his replacement in the next offseason.

Yo, dude - you need to start tagging the news articles.
I think that will really help the tag system take off, if the newsie articles are easier to find by using them.

Thanks to Josdin for the awesome sig!

I'm pretty much in agreement here. I only write to add that the thing we'll likely miss most about Pat when he goes is his on and off the field leadership. Hopefully one of the younger guys can step into that role in the next year or two.

Didn't he say he wants to play another 3 or 4 years?

I say extend him for 3 years, give him the money he wants. He's a valuable asset and without him we wouldn't have that near record setting rush defense we had last season.

If we did that, and then he decides to retire after year 1 how dows that affect the team's salary cap?
Is that the same as releasing someone?
