Pagac Anticipates DT Guion Making Impact In 2011

DT Letroy Guion was credited with 2 tackles on those four plays but his impact was even greater. He was a disruptive force in that series of plays and it did not go unnoticed by the Vikings coaching staff.

“One guy in particular, Letroy Guion, he lit it up in that situation,” Vikings Defensive Coordinator Fred Pagac said on Tuesday. “He did a nice job for us.”

Not sure about the rest of you, but I've been loving what I've been seeing out of Guion, Ballard and Griff. Future is bright in that regard my friends.

On a side note, love this little nugget especially when one considers how our rotation has basically been almost comical over the last couple of years....
Speaking of the rotation, Pagac was asked if he took extra pride in the goal line stand from Saturday because it was his second-team defense that was in the game taking on Seattle’s first-team offense. As I said earlier, Pagac is a throwback and is not one to provide much hyperbole. He made it clear that while the goal line stand was a feather in the defense’s cap, it’s also something that he expects his players to accomplish.

“Again, as far as our front’s concerned,” Pagac said, “we’re planning on rolling those guys all year long, so in my mind they’re a part of our ones so they’ve got to play hard all the time, too.”

I've been pretty vocal about my concerns, but as of the last couple of weeks I think I can see what he's trying to do.

Clearly (unless I'm missing everything) there is a new approach to the way the DL is going to be used. Sure seems to be alot more stunts along the line than I've seen in the past.

I especially like how they are doing that and including a LB in the mix without always showing that same old "Mug" look from the LB'rs pre-snap that we saw so much of.

Again I worry about two things......

    1. No "Warpig" at the NT/UT spot.
    2. Rob at LDE.

The new rotation might eliminate the need for item 1 and if the way Erin keeps tackling, maybe it won't matter when it comes to item 2.

Re: Pagac Anticipates DT Guion Making Impact In 2011

I am VERY happy with the play I have seen on the defensive line.

I think Guion is built for the NFL and knew coming out of college that it might take a couple of years, but he would be solid.

On the outside I think we are more than set with the extremely solid play of Griffen to go with JA and Rob.

Also love what I have seen from the rooks. I think we will be very happy with our defensive line this year. If the LBs hold up, I think we are going to be a very solid defense.

    Good stuff, as always, Midg.

Quick question, I would have liked to see Griff get some reps at LDE with maybe Rob taking some reps at RDE when JA was down. What is your take on seeing Griff at RDE so much?

Only thing I can come up with is that they really want to be sure Rob can hold up at LDE so they are working him there exclusively.

Re: Pagac Anticipates DT Guion Making Impact In 2011

Probably could be in its own thread but after a Hammer siting today, I think this fits in here just as well.

Other candidates: Left defensive end Adrian Awasom. He's the No. 2 left end and looks like he can become a legit NFL pass rusher; Tight end Allen Reisner. No undrafted rookie has turned more heads than the big kid from Iowa. He's got the size, the hands and enough speed to make it somewhere. The only question is why he chose to come to a team that's loaded at tight end. He'd make a nice practice squad player if he doesn't end up being taken by another team; Linebacker Larry Dean. He's small at 6-foot, 226 pounds. But last year's D-II Defensive Player of the Year is instinctive, fast and just puts himself around the ball. He could surprise people if he can latch on as a special teamer.

Three sleeper breakout candidates (and player moves)
