Oxygen device helps Sharper recover faster

MANKATO - After brushing his teeth and putting on his pajamas every night, Darren Sharper climbs into a blue canvas bag and zips it tight over his head.

No, Sharper is not practicing for a future role as a vampire. Instead, the Vikings safety is sleeping in a portable hyperbaric chamber in his dorm room at Minnesota State, Mankato.

"If you're claustrophobic," Sharper said, "you wouldn't like it."

The device, which Sharper began using last season, pumps higher levels of oxygen into a person's lungs. Sharper said he believes the oxygen helps his body recover quicker from strenuous exertion while also speeding the process of recovering from an injury.

Mark Ellis, a former Vikings assistant strength and conditioning coach, introduced Sharper to the therapy last season after he sprained his knee Sept. 18 against Cincinnati. Sharper missed two games but returned to resume an All-Pro season that included nine interceptions.

"There's no doubt in my mind it helped me get back quicker from my knee injury last year," Sharper said. "And I also think it's going to help me here in camp."

    Sending Moon support

Fullback Tony Richardson will miss Friday's practice with Kansas City to attend this weekend's NFL Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Canton, Ohio. Richardson is close friends with 2006 inductee Warren Moon, a Chiefs teammate in 1999 and 2000.

"We were really close in Kansas City," Moon said during a teleconference Tuesday.

Richardson will return to Mankato either Saturday evening or Sunday morning.

Moon played from 1994-1996 for the Vikings, one of his four NFL teams. Joining Richardson at the ceremony will be Leonard Wilf, the Vikings' vice chairman; Kevin Warren, vice president of operations and legal counsel; and Bob Hagan, public relations director.

    Etc.

    • Receiver Dez White did not practice Tuesday afternoon and safety Dwight Smith left practice early, accompanied by a member of the team's medical staff. White had a brace on his right knee, while Smith appeared to be limping slightly. Coach Brad Childress would not release the condition of either player and is not scheduled to speak to the local media again until Friday night.

    • Center Matt Birk on his first full-pads practice in 18 months: "Physically, it felt great. A lot of rust to work off, but I wasn't thinking about my body or my injuries or anything out there. I was just trying to work my techniques to get better."

    • Childress said Friday's scheduled scrimmage against the Chiefs will mostly be practice drills. "There will not be a whole lot of live stuff," Childress said. "We just want their bodies to work against [us]."

    • Fan attendance at practices, influenced by inclement weather and schedule, continued to be sparse Tuesday.

They don't do THAT much difference, but they certainly help a little..

Sorry, I'm just sore because a hyperbaric chamber was billed as the way that Simon Jones would get back into the England squad for the Ashes last summer, and it failed.

    Miserably, failed.

Peter King had a blurb about Dan Morgan sleeping in one in Carolina's camp.
