    Smith will play season opener

NFL delays decision on appeal of suspension

    BY JASON WILLIAMS

    Pioneer Press

SEATTLE — The Vikings can relax a bit about their running-back situation.

Onterrio Smith will get to play at least in the Sept. 12 regular-season opener against Dallas because the NFL is not expected to make a decision on his appeal of a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy until after Minnesota begins the regular season, a person with knowledge of the situation said Thursday night.

That person said the decision likely would be made sometime before the Vikings' second game, at Philadelphia on Sept. 20.

This should quell some of coach Mike Tice's concerns about his depth at running back. Starter Michael Bennett is expected to miss the Dallas game with a sprained right knee but almost certainly will return to play against Philadelphia.

    Smith is Bennett's primary backup.

Perhaps an indication that the Vikings are preparing for Smith to play in the opener is that the second-year pro played on the Vikings' first possession in Thursday night's exhibition finale against the Seattle Seahawks at Qwest Field. Smith was the fourth-string running back in last Friday's exhibition victory over San Francisco, not entering the game until late in the third quarter.

Last week Tice selected veteran Moe Williams the starter for the Dallas game. Whether Smith will get the nod now is uncertain. But the former University of Oregon standout will bolster a running game that would have had to rely heavily on the aging Williams and on promising but unproven rookie Mewelde Moore in the opener.

Smith led NFC rookies with 579 yards rushing last season.

No, it really isn't great news, in fact, I think it sucks almost as much as Leonard Little being able to play.

Onterrio failed a drug test, he should be suspended immediately. He failed, no cushion, just suspension. It's setting a bad example for kids by saying 'Hey, if you get suspended, it takes a while, because you can appeal it, don't worry about the consequences!'

I don't care if he's a Viking, the league is making a mistake by doing this.

true he failed a test, but what's the difference if it's games 2-5 or 1-4?

Looks like smith could see more time then just the first game against the cowboys.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. –- Running back Onterrio Smith could play up to three games before the NFL rules on his appeal of his four-game suspension, a source close to the situation said Saturday.

Smith, who faces a four-game ban for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy, practiced with the team Saturday. If suspended for the start of the season, his exile would begin Monday, but that appears unlikely since the league hasn’t ruled on his appeal.

The league’s disciplinary board might not reconvene for another round of arbitration until late September, according to the source, which would allow Smith to play in the Vikings’ first three games.

Saturday, head coach Mike Tice confirmed that the league still has not told the team whether Smith will be eligible for the Vikings’ regular season opener next Sunday against Dallas.

“We have not been informed by the league one way or another,” Tice said. “We’re going to move forward as if we have him until we’re notified by the league one way or another.”

The NFL does not comment on suspensions before they are finalized.

Smith’s availability in the first month of the season could be crucial for the Vikings.

Starting running back Michael Bennett will miss the opener with a sprained knee, and isn’t expected to start until after the team’s bye in Week 4.

Short-yardage specialist Moe Williams will start Sunday’s game but, if eligible, Smith also would see extended action.

Smith, expected to be the No. 2 back behind Bennett, was a fourth-round pick of the Vikings in 2003.

Due to trouble in his college career -- he was thrown off the Tennessee football team for marijuana use, and was arrested for DUI after transferring to Oregon -- he reportedly entered the league in phase one of the substance-abuse policy.

A positive test in training camp, reportedly for marijuana, triggered the four-game suspension.

Smith led all NFC rookies with 579 yards and scored five touchdowns last season

Id rather have him get this suspension over with so he can join the team as quickly as possible, we need him down the back stretch, not just getting used to the offense again. Also, look at the exemptions other players have had, ricky williams had his 3rd failed test excused which would have warranted just a 4 game suspension. This latest suspension was a whole season before he retired. Jimmy Smith got another 4 game suspension taken away two seasons ago when he was still doing well. It all depends on who you are in this league.

Exactly...Our (Dallas) starting NT Leo Carson serves his 1 game suspension opening day.

But this is typical of the bias the NFL has against the Cowboys

Not convinced?...look no farther than the Cowboy should be HOF'ers not enshrined in Canton

Maybe if you made Rick James your mascot you'd get more recognition?

After all, both James and the Cowboys agree:

Is it safe to have him playing with all of those white lines all over the field?

If he starts making perpendicular cuts right along the yardline markers, we'll know he's not through his 28 day program yet.
Have you ever seen a race of turtles, and they all go the wrong way instead of towards the finish line?

    Welcome to the NFC North.
